Identity crisis?

A "power"-enduser frequently askes me questions about Excel VBA, with which I'm not too familiar. So I directed him to the Lounge, to ask those questions himself. I talked him through the steps by phone. As soon as he reached the Main Index page, with surprise in his voice he asked me if my nickname was JanB, because he saw "Welcome JanB" instead of boxes for nick and password.
I then logged out, quit IE and asked him to quit IE also and then go to the Main Index page of the Lounge. And again it said "Welcom JanB"... Additional info:
- mixed Novell / Windows Server network
- everyone uses the same company gateway with firewall to internet
- we're using groupaccounts for e-mail and his address is different from mine
- I never logged in on his PC and he never logged in on my machine
- we found wopr cookies on both machines, with different first part of the name, and his cookie did not contain my nickname

Can anyone explain this, and, more importantly, what steps to take to allow this enduser entering the Lounge as himself?

Sounds very odd!

Does your network router/gateway hold a local cache? What happens if your friend visits a forum you have not visited (eg Test)?

Ask your colleague to hit refresh whilst holding down CTRL and see if that does a fresh refresh.

What happens if you log out?

Deleting the WOPR cookie on his machine should cause the login boxes to appear next time, I think.

Yes indeed!

> Does your network router/gateway hold a local cache?
Yes, and we found both cookies in there also. They are different from each other. See my first post.

Don't know and the user has just left the office for the weekend, so I cannot ask him to test.

> What happens if you log out?
See my first post. If that's not what you mean, then please clarify.

I don't know what link you gave him over the phone to get to The Lounge, but it sounds like maybe you gave him a link that includes YOUR user name. Did you, or can you give him this link to log in with: WOPR

Re: Identity crisis?

I told him to go to www.wopr.com and then go to Quick Links on the lower left side and click Woody's Lounge.

I guess he should try Leif's suggestion and have HIM log out and try it then (again). I don't know much (if anything) about corporate firewalls, but is it possible that yours "transmits" the same IP address for all users in the browser?

Al

All PCs behind a corporate firewall appear to have the same IP address as that of the external interface of the firewall. Probably all the PCs have one of the "non-routable" / private IP addresses...

Can't resist the opportunity to correct the lounge pedant.
One address shared between many PCs would make the network unusable.
Probably each of the PCs has a different one of the "non-routable" / private IP addresses...

Re: Identity crisis?

Tried all suggestions by Hans and Leif, but these didn't solve the problem.
Our network administrator tends to believe though that it's something on our side that causes this.
I'll post back if I can tell more about that. Thanks to all for their contribution so far.

You don't use a proxy server, that's caching everything, do you? I didn't see it suggested previously.

Re: Identity crisis?

Did you delete ALL of the WOPR cookies from the troubled machines?
If NOT do it. It sounds like that your cookie in there with a "Auto log in" setting and doing as told, to log in using your user name.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Identity crisis?

Thanks. Going to try that too.
As I said in my first post in this thread, there was only 1 wopr cookie on the other user's PC. That was different from the one on my PC and did not contain my nickname.

Re: Identity crisis?

Thanks. I'll pass this to the network administrator.
