email merge? (Outlook Express 6)

In Word, we can easily do mail merge to create "personalized" letters. Can we do something similar in Outlook or Outlook Express (i.e. generating a few emails each with individual recipient's name)

    Thanks

Unfortunately I never found a way to do it in OE - the closest I came that I remember was to copy the content of the email to the clipboard then paste it into each email as I created it.

You can send 'individual' emails to lots of people without each one knowing who else received it by putting a placebo address in the To box (eg 'Private' with your own address - there has to be something there and it has to be a real address) and putting all the recipients in the BCC box. However, you can't individualise the content and a word of warning - a lot of modern spam-catching software considers emails with lots of names in the BCC box to be dubious and deletes them, so you might find the recipients don't receive your email if you do this.

For OE... use the BCC feature and leave the "To" line blank. Each recipient that is BCC'd will receive their mail with only their name in the "To" line.

Try it with your name (using your address) and a bogus name (using your address) in the BCC box and you will recieve both emails with different names in the "To" lines.

Hi Doc, that's a nifty idea, if it works, but are you sure it does in OE? I thought that OE simply wouldn't let you send an email without any names in the To box, which was why I had the 'Private' address created?

I may be wrong (I don't use OE any more) but one of the email systems I've used refuses to send without a To address, and it's not Outlook (because I've just tried it) which only leaves OE!

Hmm - I wonder where I got the idea it didn't, then? Must be a senior moment ...!

I was concerned that I was having a moment when I remembered that it did that and then wasn't sure that my memory was serving me correctly, so I tested it. My theory, not my memory........ or was it both ?? I can't recall..........
