    Network connections

I'm trying to network my laptop to the home pc to share the broadband and printer using the network cards in each machine and a cable.

The wizard appears to work on the pc, I made a setup disc, copied the setup file to a flash drive and ran it on the laptop.

Both the pc and the laptop report that they are connected but the laptop can't see anything other than itself on the network. The pc can see the laptop but reports that it is not accessable.

If I click the repair button on the support tab in the status dialogue on the pc, no problems are reported. The same exercise on the laptop fails to renew the IP address and sugests I contact the person who manages my network!

Any sugestions as to what I need to look at next would be gratefully received.

    Regards

    Graeme

Do you have a router? What OS on each PC? If it is XP, see Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing and other at the same site.

    Thanks for coming back.

There's no router, the network cards in the pc and the laptop are connected by a network cable.

The pc connects to the internet via a USB BT Voyager broadband modem.

    Both machines are running XP.

I'll go read the link you provided.

    Regards

Is this cable a cross over or a standard cat 5?

When using NIC to NIC and no hub or router and cross over is required.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

With wireless in general you must be aware that anyone within range can use your connection. You must read up on security measures to take with wireless. Poke around PracticallyNetworked.com for a lot of information.

    Re: Network connections

Sorry for the late reply, the other half seems to think that there are things more important than playing on the computer all day. Don't know where she got that from.

Thanks for the advice. That and the reading I've done, I certainly know a lot more about the subject now.

I'll use the flash memory to get by with for now then I'll get a BT router to keep continuity between service provider and internet hardware.

    Regards
