disk icons in explorer (XP SP2)

I've just deleted a couple of my hard drive partitions using the DISKPART utility (having backed-up first). All seems to have gone perfectly other than one minor issue.

My new E & F drives have both been EXTENDed to incorporate previous partitions, but they appear with different "Disk Icons" in Windows Explorer - See img below. Their "Properties in Disk Manager appear the same, and I can't find anything in Windows Help. I've tried Google, but found too many results, and none on the first couple of pages seemed right.

Any suggestions welcome. I'm assuming that as the Icons are different their behaviour in some way will be different, and I'd like to understand what it means.

I don't believe that the icon's behaviour will be affected by this. It's simply a display setting that has gotten trashed in the process of changing your partition structure. I use Microangelo to change my icons and can't recall how to change the drive icons using Windows native process. I'll ponder this and post back if and when it comes to me.

The free utility TweakUI (download from Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP) has an option to rebuild all the icons used in Windows Explorer. It's in the Repair section.

Thanks. I already had Tweakui, so I tried it first, and it didn't change the defective icon. I then downloaded a trial version of Microalgelo, and it failed to change it also.

If it doesn't change the disk behaviour, then its not too important, but it would still be nice to understand what it means.

It's not the old iconcache problem perhaps? See this thread from last year.

Doesn't appear to be related. I've read all that thread., but I have always kept "My Computer" on the desktop - one of the few I do keep.

I did however delete it then re-install it - no change.

I haven't had time to read a few more of the Google responses, but I'll try that at the weekend maybe, to see if anyone else has an answer.

Managed to rectify the problem with Tune-Up Utilities at http://www.tune-up.com/

Downloaded their Trial version. It didn't repair it automatically, but I was able to individually replace the icon.

I'd still be interested to know what caused this, and whether there was a difference in properties for this drive.

"I was able to individually replace the icon" mind sharing what you did to do this?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Usiing TuneUp, there is an option called WinStyler.

Here I was able to go to Select a visual style, then choose File system, and I got the screen shown below.

This let me change the individual icon. I checked the exiting icons to see precisely which was being used, then selected the same icon for my "defective" drive. Worked fine.

Smashing little utility, I'll now evaluate it over the next 30 days see whether its worth buying.
