Copying clipboard from one computer to another

Is there any way of copying to the clipboard one computer on a network and pick it up for pasting on a second computer on the network. It's a unique application I am working on ... which requires copying data from varying sources displaying on computer 1 into a spreadsheet on computer 2. Definitely not convenient to have them all operating simultaneously on one machine. Some date needs to be copied manually ... some, it would help, if it could be copied and pasted between computers -- copying a string of figures can lead to errors. (The machines are side by side.) I've got clip cache on both machines, but can't find a way to make them share a database file.

I use ClipMate for my clipboard management and it has an "export to files" option as well as a "backup database" option, either of which I would think could be used from a second computer although I've not done so. Does Clip Cache have any options similar to those?

Well ClipCache has a save database, save as database, and archive function. The database file is kept in the local temp directory. Which is simple enough, except that there doesn't seem to be a way within the program of pointing it to another location. ... Saving the database and copying it over would work, but I'd like something to work more in real time. There are something in the neighborhood of 600 items which need to be transferred in this way each month.

Ouch, that's a heavy load! I understand your search and hang in here to see if someone else has any suggestion. I just wondered, even if the "save or export" were on the local machine, if you could then go to machine #2 and "load or restore," giving the location of the temp directory on machine #1. Pretty kludgy, I know, but I don't have any other ideas and am not intimately familiar with the innards of how Windows saves clipboard data (I guess that's irrelevant, using a third-party clipboard manager).

    Hi Al

I've just come across this and haven't tried it. There might be something in it to suit your purpose.

    Clipboard Recovery 2.0

This is the second version of Clipboard Recovery. The interface has been remodeled, and the software now supports the two most commonly used clipboard formats: Graphics and Text.

The software works by adding itself to the clipboard viewer chain. When the clipboard is updated, the software saves the current content to a temporary file. Users have options to either preview previous clipboard items or set previous items back onto the clipboard.

    Price: <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> for software, $20.00 USD for single license of source code.
Requirements: Windows XP, 1MB Free Disk Space, 1MB RAM
    File Information: 160KB Application

BTW, I'm guessing you're not "Year of the cat" Al Stewart?

Re: Copying clipboard from one computer to another

Thanks for the info on Clipboard recovery ... I'll take a look.

As to your last question ... NO ... there are a lot of us Al Stewart's around ...

    Al

PS: Well it was a good thought. Clipboard Recovery apparently requires WinXP. As it happens the two machines I am using are running on Win98SE, and Win2000. Maybe something else will show up, or maybe I have to do this all manually.

Sorry we didn't stumble on a Lounge "celebrity" thanks to your musical knowledge, Alan. Al's response reminds me of MY most infamous problem - Dr. Albert Hoffmann (note the spelling with two Ns). Although the spelling of my name was accidently change by a birth registrar in my home county, I still get occasional teasing from some about the "famous" doctor. (Albert Hofmann Foundation)

    Al,
Be sure that whatever you try says it is designed to be used in a multi-user networked environment. If it is not, you could end up losing data.

Re: Copying clipboard from one computer to another

Just looking at your requirements again, is it possible to use your clipboard program, together with its data file, from a folder that resides only on the "source" computer, but is shared as a network drive?

Edited - bearing in mind the importance of what Joe just said too! A thorough test might be in order first.

Take a look at Share clip . Distributed as a freeware and can share Text portion of the clipboard. Nice cross-platform interoperability. I've use this one successfully with another freeware clipboard utility from CyberMatrix's ClipboardMagic in pasting multiple text clips.

Re: Copying clipboard from one computer to another

If I do a lot of saving rather than just copying, it appears that I could eventually transfer data with ClipCache between machines ... but I don't think it would save me any time.. For real time activitiy it seems to hold data in memory (which isn't accessible from the other machine) until "saved" or at exit.

Just took a look at ShareClip's website ... and downloaded it. From the info on the page, it looks like this may be just what I am looking for. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Al

Hey ! It works. Does just what I need. Thanks again.

It could be a bit of overkill, but you can use linked tables in MS Access to share data.
Assume there is a network folder containing an Access DB that will store the data in a table. Call it the Master

All other users have a copy of another DB which has tables inked to the Master's - that way everyone has access to the same version of the data.
Cut and paste to the linked tables and it's available to everyone immediately.

It's a little bit too much for this particular application ... but I'll keep it in mind for a "maybe" in the future.

Right now that "share clip" utility is working great.

Thanks for all the ideas and help.

A quick google turned up <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> ditto which looks like it might be just what you need.
