    Two windows directories (XP Home)

I have 2 windows directories on my pc
    c:windows
    c:windows.0

I think that the first one is still the old win98 directory, but I'm not sure.
Is it safe to rename (initially) and later remove the old directory, so that I can save some space on my hd?
Is there a way to tell which directory winxp is being run from?

Go to the root of your boot drive (usually C. Open 'boot.ini'. The folder in the 'default' line should be WinXP as long as you do not have a dual boot setup. Additionally, if you examine the file properties for files such as accwiz.exe & access.cpl in the system32 subfolder the WindowXP files will have a version of 5.1.2600.xxx (xxx depends on the service pack installed).
