    User status (XP Home SP2)

I was playing with the user permissions to give my wife access to a game program I installed. The directions provided said to go to Start > Run, type in "control userpasswords2" selected the user and the instructions were to make them a Power User. That radio button gave me an error and said it wasn't valid. (I had thought this was a Pro feature.) A third selection I had was a "User" from a drop down menu. I thought I'd try that. Now that user is gone. Her files are still there and if I try to set up a new user with the same name, it tells me it is in use.

How do I get this profile back so it shows at the logon screen and recognizes the files related to it?

FWIW I used a restore point and have it back. But there must be another way to restore a user and I don't understand why the user profile disappeared.

With the HOME version you can be a Admin or a Limited user see attachment. This can be done from the control panel, and then user accounts.

The problem is that the user name didn't show in the list any longer, to change it back.

    Andy,

Trouble is, I don't really understand how the user disappeared either. The drop down list you described just enables a user to be moved between groups, and I can't see how that could cause the symptoms you described.

I'm pleased that System Restore worked for you, thanks for letting us know.

On my HOME version this is the pane that comes up. There is NO radio button just the "Add, Remove and Properties" buttons. I think that you had selected the "Remove" button the first time and the account was removed.

Because of the reference to "Power User" I assumed that the original poster had selected this drop down after clicking the Properties button visible in your screen shot. Does this exist in the Home version?

Yes, it does, I did NOT go deep enough when I checked it out.

But, I think the user did hit "Remove" the first time, instead of Properties, and this is why the account was deleted.
