Shutdown Problem

A couple of older computers Running W98 2nd Ed at our local senior center won't shut down! They go through the usual shutdown procedure, but then immediately start booting up again. Any suggestions as to what's going on and how to fix it?

(Edited by AlanMiller on 13-Feb-05 10:45. )
I think it could be one of a million things Chuck! It's often due to a running process that won't respond to Windows trying to shut it down. The first thing I'd do is to look for such problem processes using a process viewer (other than Ctrl-Alt-Del). If no joy digging these out, an "over the top" reinstall will often work to restore correct shutdown behaviour, without messing up installed programs. Some problems may arise though, if older .dll files etc. replace newer ones. Maybe running SFC first might give you a chance to get them back.

Edit - I forgot about the reboot problem you mention. You might get some answers here, but I didn't drill down for this specific issue.

    Re: Shutdown Problem

I haven't used Win98 for awhile, Alan, so maybe you'll remember if I'm on the right track. Didn't Microsoft have a patch for "shutdown problems" back in the earlier times of Win98? I've looked in my software archives here, but I don't have a copy - I think I left all that stuff when I stopped working.

Correction: I found the file. It's about four years old, so MS may have stopped providing it. I DID download this from MS web sites and have used it in the past (screenshot). I may have changed the file name to make my filing easier. The EXE is really a "cabinet" file and has a bunch of files contained in itself. If it would help, I could Zip it up and put it up on my web space.

Correction #2: Check <!post=this thread,331114>this thread<!/post> from about a year ago. (Searching this forum for "shutdown" brings up lots of hits.)

You can get the patch from Microsoft here. Just follow the process to get to the DL link. Or get it without all the process from PCWorld, here.

    Re: Shutdown Problem

When you click shutdown, take a look at the next box. Make sure it says shutdown and not restart. Once you check the restart box it will do that until it is changed back to shutdown.

    Re: Shutdown Problem

Thanks John, I've checked that one, but I have been too occupied lately to go back and pursue this problem. Perhaps next week.
