Memorial Day Logo

Hi,

Drk, you've done it again- a great logo. You've been doing a fantastic job with all of the logos for the forum, and this one is no different- it looks great.

But I'm a little put off by one feature. Maybe this is just "bah humbug" stuff- if so, ignore me.

I understand that Memorial Day is a US Holiday. Hence the flag.

But each country represented on the forum has its own memorial day, its own national day, and other special days. It's too much to do one country a big deal on every national holiday.

It's probably too late to suggest:

.A few more flags representative of contributors' countries (in lieu of every single country having their own day represented)
.Maybe the word "Happy" is not quite appropriate.

my - and thanks for the twocents icon as well as so many others you've contributed.

Re: Memorial Day Logo

You know, I was thinking along those lines while creating it.. I definitely feel that the 'happy' is out of place, As to other countries having thier own national days, where there's a need, (read request) I'll do all I can to make it happen (given the proper notice...) Being a full-blooded American, (and proud!) I havn't forgotten the meaning of Memorial Day, the banner is a tribute to the Millions who have lost thier lives. The Vietnam War has effected the United States more than any other 'modern' war, hence the 58,220 figure, and visual reference to the Memorial.

It's a solemn day, but many people enjoy thier weekends. (three days you know...) In retrospect, maybe 'Happy' should be there.. If anyone is put off outright, I can definitely make changes.

I thought about that but it does mark the official Start of Summer here so I reckoned it was OK.

Re: Memorial Day Logo

The effect the Vietnam conflict had on the country was significant. But to say the country was affected by this conflict more than any other "'modern' war" (by which I assume you mean 20th century) is arguable. This probably isn't the place for it but I think WWII affected more people in more ways than Vietnam and changed the course of this country and it's place in the world much more than Vietnam did. Sorry, been watching too many Pearl Harbor shows. Just my opinion.

Re: Memorial Day Logo

As far as number of people effected by the war itself, perhaps you're correct, however when you think about the cultural effect it had on people's every-day lives, the hippie movement, Veteran rights, Music, Free love, Independence, etc..etc..etc... I feel that the Vietnam War did more to change the way America felt about conflict and it's government.

On the flip-side, the women's movement was greatly boosted by WWII, as all the men were overseas fighting in the conflict(s). Many came back to house-wives who were eager to work, that had equal if not greater signifigance in America's thinking.

From a graphical composition Standpoint, Vietnam was the only choice really, although both of these wars had profound effects on America, Vietnam is the only one with a widely known memorial at this point, (I hear WWII is in the works, and the plans for it look Great.)

Again, I have no bias either way.., and I think I reached the desired effect with that banner..

Thanks for the insight!

In retrospect, WWII did pull the U.S. out of recession, and proved the world that it is a Superpower, also brought to light the atrocities of war, and the worst it can possibly be, varying stories of survival still have thier effect on school children and adults alike... Anne Frank, & others... Both made America what it is today.. in one way or another..

Well, now I'm a little confused after being in Scuttlebut and reading some of the content there. I certainly don't mean to challenge you but I'm not sure what I can post any more. Could you explain what about the thread that was a violation of this rule? Was it in the wrong section or just the content was wrong for the entire board? Thanks!!

Re: Memorial Day Logo

I think it was starting to get a little too patriotic and political and that's why Eileen stepped in. We don't discourage patriotism, but flag waving isn't really appropriate on a board that includes Loungers from all over the world.

It isn't just a case of political correctness (that's a disease we suffer from excessively in California, by the way), it's an issue of courtesy and of not making anyone else uncomfortable.

Re: Memorial Day Logo

I see. It would be the last thing I would want to make someone feel uncomfortable on a board like this. Ironically, having been an English major at one point in my life, the main reason I responded was to point out in as subtle way I could the appropriate use of the words affect and effect.

Is this rule in place in all of the sections? I seem to remember reading some threads in Scuttlebut that stretched it a little (making fun of southerners comes to mind). Are the rules available online some place? Thanks Charlotte!
