    Importing Text File

    Excel2000 - SR-1

I am trying to import a file that has position markers for fields that are blank. I can see the markers if I'm opening the text file.

However, when I try to import the file into excel, the markers disappear, condensing the lines - which makes fixed delimiting impossible!

    Any ideas?

What is the ASCII number of the disappearing character? Can you Search-&-Replace these "magic markers" with something obvious like "

How would I discern the # of the ASCII character? It's that silly box thing...

Um, ah, I have a habit of firing up The SemWare Editor Pro to look under the hood whenever I get a weird file, which isn't going to help you any. Try Notepad or any of the text editors suggested in , or you could try the <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.semware.com/html/tse32demo.html>TSEP Evaluation Version but it's pricy to buy.

    Re: Importing Text File

Y'know - the really annoying thing about this problem is that the legacy system I'm receiving this from will be discontinued in the next month or so...

I am going to switch to a different extract process and grab the data that way!

Thanks 4 your time, tho. And I will look into those products. I'm in banking, so I run into alot of antiquated junk - so I'm sure they will be very useful

That "silly box thing" is most likely a carriage return without a linefeed, or visa versa. Excel will not use that as a delimiter. You will either have to write a macro that reads the file in binary mode and store the data, or find a text editor that will replace that character with something that Excel will use as a delimiter.

    Re: Importing Text File

can you open the file as fixed field, using just one field, so that the entire line goes into column A.
Then you may be able to use the Data|TextToColumns command.

    hope this helps
