Dead Hyperlinks? (FrontPage 2003)

I'm a bit new to using FP, so the problem I'm encountering could be something simple as an option setting. But for the moment, I am stumped...

    Here's what's happening -

    1.
In task pane, click on New | One Page Web Site

Choose template from dialog box - Persoanl Web Site

Save to My Documents/My Web Sites/Test1. FrontPage builds the site and opens for editing.

Double-click index.htm from left-hand folder and file list to open the homepage for editing.

At the bottom of screen, click Preview to change to Preview mode.

Click on the pre-set hyperlinks to view other pages. But, links will not work! No action at all. The links appear to be dead.

Click on Design to return to Design mode.

Test same hyperlinks using Ctrl+Click. Links work fine. Now I'm able to navigate from one page to another.

Return to Preview mode and the links are still dead.
I thought preview mode was suppose to be a way to test the site before publishing. Shouldn't everything work in Preview mode? What am I doing wrong besides trying to learn a new program?

Nope - Preview mode won't follow links. Try "File>Preview in Browser". This actually launches an instance of your browser and links can now be followed. The Preview mode is simply affording a view of the web page as it will (or should) appear in a browser window.

John - Thanks so much for clearing this up for me. I opened the file using the browser and it worked just as it should. I misunderstood the purpose of Preview Mode.

On another note: I'm using a FP2003 Learning Program and it says that I should change my screen resolution to 800X600 before using FP. Is this really necessary? I understand the need for compatibility, but hasn't MS addressed the issue with the feature located at the bottom right corner of the application? Looks to me like the work / view area can be set within the application without tinkering with the overall screen resolution. Setting #3 seems to do the trick... Am I wromg?

I didn't notice that option before. Thanks for pointing it out. Yes, I would think that you can use that option. If you apply this to an existing page which is already larger than this however, there will be some distortion and some chopping of the page. Better to start a page at this size (actually the vertical measurement is not critical). I think the only reason the book suggested the 800 X 600 change was to force you to design your pages to accommodate this resolution. If you design your pages to fit within an 800 pixel width (i.e. page width of 760 pixels), those whose screen resolution is 800 X 600 won't have to scroll horizontally to view the page. Scrolling vertically isn't a problem.

    Hyperlinks should work in preview.

You might check out this Microsoft article on the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;823720
    for more information.

Thanks for the info. I've made the registry change and will try FrontPage a little later to see if it made a difference. The FrontPage training program I was using kept demostrating how to use the links while in Preview mode. I had assumed til now that it was an error in the training program... For others who are interested, here is a link to the registry tweak...

Problem: The hyperlink does not work when you open a Web page in Preview and then click the hyperlink in FrontPage = MSKB Article 823720

Thanks for that pointer Tracy. Made the registry change and it works as advertised.
