    Cd Burner(Writer) Problem

My CD writer light comes on when I power up my computer and my computer doesn't see the drive. There is no disk in the CD. Any ideas on what could be happening here. I don't see a manual eject button and the door won't open....HELP!!

Do you mean that the drive isn't seen in Explorer or in Device Manager? Did any software come with the drive, and if so, did you install it? I have never seen a CD drive without an eject button ???

    Re: Cd Burner(Writer) Problem

This doesn't address the overall problem. But if there's a disc in the optical drive that you need to remove, you should see a small pin hole on the face of the drive (usually just below the drawer). If you'll insert a straightened paperclip into the hole, you should be able to trigger the manual eject mechanism.

A light on the face of the drive is an indication that (at least) you have power to the drive. Hard to imagine that there's not an eject button on the face of the drive! Most of the time, it's the only button. Whether your system recognizes the drive or not (at this point), as long as there's power, the eject button should work.

Post back with the brand and model of the drive and we can help you more. Perhaps even help you obtain the drivers needed for a proper install of the drive. Also, we'll need to know which operating system you're using: Windows 98, Windows XP, etc.

Sorry, when I said an "Eject" button - I meant "manual eject button", you know the little hole?. This drive was in my computer when I bought it. As far as I know - no drivers have been changed. Windows explorer doesn't see the drive. I looked in device manager and as far as I can tell it doesn't see the drive. There is no CD in the drive. This is something that is happening "Alternately" i.e. sometimes the drive light doesn't stay on or light when I start my computer ?????????

I have verified that it does not have a CD. = and on one occasion when I loaded a CD in my normal drive the burner drive light came on.

    I use Windows ME
Compaq computer - drive came with it, don't know much else.
    Normally my drives are:
    C:-Hard Drive
    D:-Hard Drive partition, backup/restore files
    E:-CD ROM drive
    F:-CD Burner
G:-Printer with memory card doolollies? -------thanks for your help

Did this drive EVER work OK?
Does the other drive work OK?
I would open the case and inspect the cabling to the optical drives to make sure they are secure and also check to see that they are designated properly as master and slave on the same IDE cable. Or if not and on the same cable as the HD to make sure it is a slave.

I also have never seen an optical drive without a small hole to open the door if it jams or won't otherwise open by hitting the eject button.

    Re: Cd Burner(Writer) Problem

I restored my computer to it's factory settings last night, but the drive light just stayed on and the drive wouldn't respond. I thought it was dead. I had some files backed up on USB drives, and this morning I was placing them back on my computer. I plugged in two USB drives at the same time and installed a program.

When the computer restarted, the computer saw the cd writer drive. Now seems to be working ok.
Does anyone know what I might could check while it's running alright?
