1. The Hell Dimensions

I had a dream last night, a terrible dream, a dream where I was trapped. I feel I need to tell you.

In my dream I was a warrior and protector of the faith and I was on a quest and nearing the end of my journey. As I walked over

a crest of the Gordonian Mountains I saw the cave of Xanathese, the entrance to the Hell dimensions. Drawing my sword, I

entered the cave. I walked along the twisted tunnel until daylight was lost and I was drawn to a glowing inner sanctum doorway.

Slowly but surely I entered the inner sanctum and as I did the doorway behind me slammed shut, I was trapped, but was I?

As my eyes adjusted to the light I realised that I was not alone! Around the edges of the cave I counted and realised that there were 100 other doors, could this be my escape? I also noted that each door was numbered 1 to 100. In the centre was a raised plinth with an open book on it. I approached, an open page read:

"IN NINETY NINE THE DEVIL RESIDES BUT IN ONE YOUR GREATEST WISH AWAITS YOU. CHOOSE WISELY, ONLY THE NUMBERS WILL TELL"

36,12,51,37,24,59,13,33,74,11,29,14,46,6,77,43,45, 66,40,17,21,61,32,64,80

Which door did I leave by?

2. Re: The Hell Dimensions

I'd avoid that 66 one if I were you... just a funny hunch.

3. Re: The Hell Dimensions

Alan

There is quite a lot of work involved with this one, a hunch may not be enough!!!!

4. Re: The Hell Dimensions

OK

This has had quite a few visits now and nobody has taken the bate apart from Alan. I shall give you a clue if you want it:

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold"> This uses a particular type of encryption process.

"Ave centurian vidi rector"- Hello centurian I saw the leader!!!

</span hide>

5. Re: The Hell Dimensions

Whilst workiing on a less whimsical solution, to demonstrate a continuing interest in the puzzle, I proffer, for your delectation:

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">"IN NINETY NINE THE DEVIL RESIDES BUT IN [bold]ONE[/bold] YOUR GREATEST WISH AWAITS YOU. CHOOSE WISELY, ONLY THE NUMBERS WILL TELL". Hence, room 1.</span hide>

Or<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold"> Go back through the door by which he entered.</span hide>

6. Re: The Hell Dimensions

Thanks Rob, sadly you are incorrect, but nice try.

As said in an earlier post in this thread, this puzzle requires you to use a particular type of decryption method.

CLUE:

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold"> 1) A recent best seller by an author with the initials DB who wrote DF uses this cryptographic method in the number puzzle after the epilog of that book

If you have not read that book

2) You may note that in an earlier post in this thread I put a cryptic message in latin ( and roughly translated it), Who is the leader? If you know, it will tell you the name of the encrytion method </span hide>

7. Re: The Hell Dimensions

OK

This one has been sitting around a little while so I will provide the answer:

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">

The basis of this puzzle, forgetting the dramatic story, is that you have to choose a door number, this number is hidden in the sentence in capitals. Using an encryption method called Ceasars Box all you have to note that there are 25 letters in the list.

1) Firstly, take all the spaces and punctuation marks out of the capitalised words so that you just have a string of letters.
2) Group the numbers in the list into fives
3) Take the first number (36) and count along the string of letters and you get (Y)
4) repeat this for each number.
5) You will get the following groups
Group 1 YEHOI
Group 2 OTONN
Group 3 UHSET
Group 4 AEEGE
Group 5 RCNON

On the face of it these letters mean nothing

But if you regroup them so that Group 2 , goes under group 1, 3 under 2 etc you get a 5 x5 grid.

All you have to do now is starting at the top left hand column and read down a message appears, which reads:

YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE GO IN TEN

Therefore, go through door 10

My clues were 1) I was talking in latin about a leader, I hoped you may think of Ceasar and therefore get Ceasars Box and the other clue was Dan Browns Best seller, Digital Fortress that uses this code at the end of the book.

8. Re: The Hell Dimensions

I see you resorted to spilling the beans.

Now that the answer is available...its quite a puzzle you designed!

9. Re: The Hell Dimensions

And I was just about to give the correct answer too! <img src=/S/innocent.gif border=0 alt=innocent width=20 height=20>

Ahem.

10. Re: The Hell Dimensions

Thanks

I blame it on me reading Digital Fortress by Dan Brown, there is a cryptogram at the back of the book. The clues on how to solve it were in the last few chapters and he cleverly put the clues to how to solve it quite subliminily. I cracked it quite quickly but only because I picked on the clues almost immediately, it was one with a lot of aahh factor, there has been a lot of talk in chat rooms and bulletin boards about it.

The message creation was the easy bit, but it was the backward engineering of the code creation that took a bit of time until I used an Excel sheet with HLookups, very similar to that long outstanding one of Ricky's I solved the other day and then I had the dream!!!!!
