    Browser IDs

Does a list of Browser IDs exist? That is, what is returned when I query the browser using JavaScript "navigator.appName", for Firefox, Safari, Opera, Konqueror, et al? I would like to identify more browsers to my visitors, using "document.write("The Web Browser you are using is Netscape Navigator.")" for example, but I don't have all the browsers loaded on my machine to test!

There are commercial products for this, such as BrowserHawk, but I've never seen just a catalog of UserAgent strings. Presumably it's out there on the web for the finding...

    Re: Browser IDs

Any serious JavaScript book has the answer (like O'Reilly's JavaScript The Definitive Guide). I did a search for "navigator.appName" on Google and got lots of hits such as:
    http://javascriptkit.com/javatutors/navigator.shtml and
    http://www.htmlgoodies.com/legacy/beyond/j...ample_code.html

It's not a straightforward as it should be due to historical differences between browsers and compatiibility.

    Re: Browser IDs

One more thought... some of these other browsers (non-NS and non-IE) often mimic NS or IE when they're queried. Since Opera is the only other browser I've used I know it can be configured to mimic your choice itself or IE (and probably NS). So if you asked an Opera browse what it was, it'll probably return IE's signature.

Thanks Deb and JScher2000. I will investigate those options.
