Linked chart format different from source sprdsht (Exce 2000)

We have a spreadsheet that has several linked charts from other spreadsheets on the network. On 1 chart, the source workbook has the numbers formatted to 2 decimal places.
When both spreadsheets are open, the format appears the same on both spreadsheets.
When you close the source spreadsheet, the format changes on the numbers to 8 decimal places. If you open the source spreadsheet again, the format goes back to 2.
I am not having much luck getting the format to stay the same as the source spreadsheet when that spreadsheet is closed & have not been able to find a way to do this other then to have the source spreadsheet open at the same time, not quite what the boss has in mind.

Can anyone help point out the evil of my ways? (or Excel for that matter!)

Have you tried explicitly setting the format on the chart the way you want it (to 2 decimals)?

On the source chart in the format properties where the values are being listed, it is set to 2 places.

On the Linked version of the chart you can not set that format property.

How is the chart linked. I thought the chart was in the open workbook and reading the linked data? In that case you should be able to format the chart.
