    free utility to shutdown pc before defrag

    Woody's has always been great for me. Let's hope it stays that way!

    I am looking for a free utility to shut down the PC so that I can defrag it.

    A 'free utility to shut down the PC'? I assume you mean something that will close all background tasks so that defrag doesn't keep restarting. If that's the case, the easiest method is just to boot the PC into safe mode & run defrag from there.

    If you prefer to go the software route, I'm sure there will be Loungers who could dig something up for you (Are you listening Mr Miller?!)

    I've found End-It-All to be effective in closing all running applications.
