Temporary folder (Latest)

Can anyone tell me how to change the temporary folder (which is always given a different, meaningless name) in which opened attachments are saved to "My Documents"?

I don't use OE, but I don't think you can change this behaviour once the attachment has been opened. If you right click on the attachment before it has been opened however, the save location defaults to "My Documents" (at least it does in Outlook).

Sure. Click on File>Save Attachments and then click on Browse and in the next window navigate through the file tree to the folder or drive you want to save to. See ScreenShot

Doc,
This is the case when the attachment is NOT open. But when the attachment is open, the native application takes over (Excel, Word, etc.) and the file save (or save as) gives the temporary folder to which the OP refers - not the My Documents folder. At least that's the way it works on my system. The "File>Save Attachments" dialogue is not available to an open attachment.

All the same John. Slightly different terms is all. In the native application (I've used Word in the ScreenShot) you choose Save or Save As and then navigate through the file tree to save the file where you want it.

I know how to navigate through the file and folder structure Doc . Maybe we're simply interpreting the original post differently. I read the post to ask if the My Documents folder could be made the default as opposed to a temporary and obscurely named folder (eg. 11CIWN1V as in your screen shot) which pops up when saving an attachment.

FWIW I read it the same way you did.

I knew you did John. The screenshot and instructions were for Mr. Thorpe. I wasn't sure if he wanted to make it the default or just choose where he wants the file to go. I don't know how you would change that default, short of a registry edit.

Do you know if there a valid reason for NOT having "My Documents" as the default?

Re: Temporary folder (Latest)

I think it's a natural spin-off from the fact that OE (according to MS's own engineers) isn't really an application in its own right - but more of a permanent add-on to IE. Thus, taken with IE's "integration" with the system, it can only use Temp folders - just like files opened from inside WinZip (rather than extracted). HTH

Re: Temporary folder (Latest)

That sounds plausible, but Outlook exhibits the same behaviour.

Thanks John, you're right - it does behave in the same way.

Re: Temporary folder (Latest)

Thank you all for the discussion - it seems that there's probably no way of permanently changing the default folder for saving to My Documents.
