    Mouse Pointer (XP SP2)

I have just gotten delivery of a new system with XP that I am trying to set up for someone else. The system has an optical mouse that is attached to a USB port. The mouse seems to work properly except that occasionally (about every 5 or 10 minutes) while I am working and using the mouse, the mouse pointer will just jump to one of the corners of the screen. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

It's probably a side effect of the surface (such as a mouse pad) on which you move the mouse. In particular, dark surfaces can cause the mouse pointer to move by itself, or to jump to a corner. You might use a piece of white paper to move the mouse on.

Interesting, I am using the mouse pad that came with the computer, almost white with a lite Dell logo on it.

Can the mouse be pulled into the PS2 mouse port?
Some are PS2 type with a USB adapter.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

No, it has a USB connector and no PS2 adapter.

Boy Legare, that's a familiar theme. You ought to check for peripheral software being run at startup, or some sub-feature of the mouse settings. I remember having either a mouse or a piece of TSR software (way back when) that would cause the pointer to jump to a corner, depending on some setting you would choose. Terrible getting old and can't remember STUFF!

    I would check:

    Mousing surface

USB drivers (try and get latest)

Mouse drivers (try and get latest)

Mouse settings (check the acceleration settings and ay other "special features" that might not be doing the right thing)

Defective mouse (get Dell to send you a new one)
