Valid dates formats (Office 2003)

I have a dialog box containing a text box used for entering a date.

It can't be a number, which is what you entered. Office doesn't know what that number represents, so it interprets it as a date serial value and converts that to the equivalent date. If you want to enter a date, you must use date delimiters valid for your regional settings, slashes, hyphens, periods, etc.
