    Keywords still necessary?

Now that search engines have their own ways of indexing the web, is there still a need/use for Keyword tags in web pages? And is there a way to exclude certain pages (e.g. pages that contain confidential info which is not linked, but only to be accessed by authorized people) from being indexed by robots? Does anybody have any certified knowledge about this issue?

Just as an example, you may want to start with Google's About page. You may want to follow several more of the links on that page for additional information.

Search engine methods are closely guarded trade secrets, so anyone posted certified knowledge probably is violating their confidentiality agreement. That said, my personal opinion is that the META Keywords and Description tags should be used for their intended purpose as a service to those using tools that look for them. No more, no less.

    Re: Keywords still necessary?

Yes indeed, keywords are still very important. I see MarkJ has already referred you Google's very useful webmaster pages and you can look this same info up on other search engine's too. Google's exact search algorithm is not published of course but there are many intelligent 'guesses' about what it is based on studying the output of the searches, breaking ties with PageRank, etc. (PageRank is named after Lawrence Page one of the two founders - it's often confused with page ranking or the order pages are placed in the output.) Think of it as a multi-variable equation where each variable is assigned a specific weight (aka importance). Not all pieces are equally important and some are only used to break tie between who gets position #3 or #4, for example. You can also read the actual patent that the Google founders submitted to the USPO and there's interesting info there about their algorithm and thinking.

After studying more of the SEO info, it's clear to me that paying for any service to improve rankings or to submit your site is pure scam. The webmaster page in Google mentions this too. The most important factor in Google's equation to get noticed the quickest if having many links to your site on someone else's (especially a site already ranked high). This isn't easy to do though.

    Thanks everyone.
FYI: your link isn't valid anymore: this is the current one
