How are you connecting at work? Check with your network people at work as you may be being blocked. Remember, the Google desktop is BETA and as such is not expected (by the vendor) to be of the same quality as an official release. There seems to be an epidemic of software that is released for extended BETA testing. Many vendors (both proprietary and open source) have programs that appear to be in a perpetual BETA state. BETA testing used to be something that had the rough edges smoothed and was generally feature complete or fairly close to feature complete. In many cases now it seems to be more of an ALPHA (fairly crude) version that companies use to wring out problems that an end user should never see.

Right on, Joe.
It is a lot less expensive to have the public debug the program than to have a team setup to do the same.
I do wonder if they think of the bad will created for their product when the word gets out that the thing is a "buggy" program? Who will rush out to buy it?

Bob,

I was very surprised to see that AOL postponed the Netscape 8 beta (not that I would've used it anyway). There must something very severely wrong to put if off. Google now has five things I can think of off the top of my head that are in public Beta with no apparent target for an official release - Groups, maps, desktop search, Gmail, Froogle. Gmail, Froogle, & Groups have been in beta for a long time.

Joe,
Maybe they are waiting to see how the MSN Search does and what if anything to change with Google?
