    Google toolbar beta

For those who like to try new stuff Google Toolbar 3 beta. The new features 'AutoLink' and "WordTranslator' sure remind me of the Smart tags that MS was included in IE during the XP betas. IIRC, they were roasted so roundly about privacy and anti-trust they dropped this from IE but kept it in Office. Does Google now get a pass on this?

Any danger of it becoming available for Firefox any time soon, anyone know? <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

It's the one thing I really miss from using IE - the ability to highlight the words searched for in the resulting page. Everything else I used to use is covered by Firefox itself or Roboforms. I miss it so much I even occasionally load up IE and use the Google search there just for that one feature; trying to find a reference to your search term in a long, wordy webpage is so frustrating without the highlight!

Have you tried the GoogleBar? It is not written by the Google team but contains most of the features of the original Google Toolbar. It is also available from the Extensions Mirror

The other extension I've put on is the Popup ALT Attribute 1.3.2005011001 which pops up Alternate Text for images and suchlike. I note that there's been an update to Ver.1.3.2005021802 , so I'd better put in on now!

    Re: Google toolbar beta

Well, I hope it works better on Firefox than it does on IE - I just clicked on the link to go and have a look and it crashed IE - twice!!

What is the benefit of having the alternate text for images etc pop up? And will that still work with all the popup blocking that goes on these days?!

By the way, I ran ShieldsUp on my home PC last night (a program that tries to hack your machine in order to check if it can be done) and it said that not one single port on my machine was open or would respond to its attempts to get in, and the machine completely ignored everything it tried - ie it doesn't exist at all as far as hackers are concerned, which ShieldsUp said was *very* uncommon for a Windows-based machine and "extremely cool!".

Do you have Norton Internet Security on your home PC? ShieldsUp is utterly staggered at this "very uncommon response", too, on my PC, which has NIS 2004. I suspect that ZoneAlarm, Sygate, and so on (maybe even the Windows Firewall!!) would give the same result.

I wonder whether this is yet another example of a Steve Gibson pronouncement which might have been true half a dozen years ago, but which no longer applies with the advance in software technology but which he hasn't had time to correct on his webpages...?

PS If nothing else, the extension enables you to see what are the names of the smilies below your name!
