    WhoIs (XP-SP2)

I am no doubt in the wrong place. AAMOF, this may not even be a WOPR area (of concern or assistance), but you guys are so good, I figgered you cold at least point me...

    I received the following email:

    Dear Valued Go Daddy Customer,

Did you know that when you register a domain name

    Re: WhoIs (XP-SP2)

Most ISPs register domain names with their own contact details, not yours, but some will allow you to register your own.

It is clear from the wording of this mail that it is a scam, I wouldn't have even read it to the end if it were addressed to me, obvious clues are...
<UL><LI>"if you act now"<LI>"The 50% savings is reserved for you, exclusively through this email offer"
<LI>"The $5.95 price will NOT appear advertised in your Account Manager, but don't worry

I don't know what you used for whois, but try this one: http://www.whois.sc/ When I put your domain in, it does list you as the admin and technical contact, including your name, address and phone number. I'm also not sure I agree that it's a scam. The wording may be a bit schmaltzy and over-marketed, but GoDaddy is a reputable registrar and one of the largest. All I've been able to find is that it IS required by ICANN that contact information be listed in whois. However, most registrar services will list intermediary contact info, for a fee. For what it's worth, Network Solutions (my registrar) wants $8 bucks to hide my contact information and I don't want to pay. I think it should be a free option.

I agree with Al, I can see the same information.

I to have my website registered through Network Solutions and I do not pay for the hiding service. Each registrar service may charge what they want for this service.

    Al:

Thanks. Yea, I think the "hide" should be free too. But as it is not, knowing that it'll take however many months / years to take hold, I'm just wondering whether this would cut down significantly on the spam attacks. 'Cause if so, maybe the $.15 per week or so is worth it in gained time and discretion.

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Re: WhoIs (XP-SP2)

My alarm bells started to ring at the mention of American International Insurance Company. Who are they?

A google on that complete name came up with some "close but no cigar" names like American International GROUP or American International ASSURANCE. There was mention of American International Insurance of NEW JERSEY but none with that complete name. ( at least on the first four pages of google hits )

The whole message sounds like a scam, to me at least.

    Re: WhoIs (XP-SP2)

Sorry Bob, but I can't agree with that reaction. If Chuck can look at the header of the email, get an IP adress and verify that it came from GoDaddy, I wouldn't think it's a scam - not from them. They've got too much to lose to do such a thing. It is terrible to make customers pay for the service, but that doesn't make it a scam, just because they may be using some little insurance company you can't find with a Google. The customer's relationship is with GoDaddy, not their supplemental insurance carrier or the proxy service.

For Chuck's benefit, I can tell you that I used to get plenty of spam or otherwise junk email because of my email address appearing in my domain registration. Finally, several months ago, I put a "throw-away" (and invalid!) email address in my domain registration to stop the crap. (P.S. Don't tell Network Solutions <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>) I figured the only thing that can cause me trouble is when Network Solutions themselves try to contact me and their email bounces. Who cares; my domain isn't up for renewal until June 2006 and when that time comes, I'm going to switch to GODADDY!

Maybe business practices in the USA are different to those in the UK - but if my hostname was registered with a company who sent me that email I would immediately transfer it to a company that behaved better.

    not their supplemental insurance carrier
    ------------------------------------------------

If you filed a claim of loss, it would be with the Insurance company not GoDaddy.
Granted, GoDaddy should stand behind their carrier but I think I would like a more well known name as the insurer. Just my opinion, Al.

Here is the question "Should a company providing a service to you force you to also pay for privacy, esp in this day and age?" I really have to agree with you..... privacy should be free with the service, ( maby only large business should have to pay but not small ones or general consumers).... I am with you 100% ...... move on to somebody that will provide the service with privacy.... IMHO

Much to my embarrassment, I have just looked up my own personal whois data, and my home address is also published - oh dear!

While I agree in principle with what Stuart And Bob are saying, no one bothered to check out Domains By Proxy, the affiliate company. Seems to be a real company with a past to 2002 and a pretty snappy web presence. While the business practice leaves something to be desired and the insurance carrier is somewhat less than well known, I'd venture that it's a legitimate offer and I'd bet that an email to GoDaddy would confirm that. My <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15> FWIW.

    Re: WhoIs (XP-SP2)

I had the same problem when I set up a friend with an ISP (there's a thread about it somewhere). She made her application/ payment by mail, rather than electronically, which must have challenged the <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> out of the geniuses who had to process her form.

Not only did her home address & phone number become exposed, but they even managed to mess up her e-mail address (used X@X.com) so that she couldn't access/ change any of it. She was never given a password, so each time she tried to make changes, she'd click "Forgotten Password" and would receive the helpful message that the p/w had been sent to X@X.com. I know you know your Latin Stuart - maybe Incompetus Ultimus is close to the phrase I'm looking for.
