Popup Invasion (XP Home w/ SP2)

My system has all the goodies...AdAware, Spybot, Spyware Guard, Hyjack This, CW Shredder, Trend Micro Virus Scan & Norton AV-Corp Edition.

The Popup invasion started this past Thursday after I downloaded LimeWire. I deleted that app and the Bullseye app, but the popups still come.

Spyware Guard keeps blocking the following intruder: ' websearch.disnsearch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=". I did a system search but could not locate it.

Any ideas what I can do to trace this and any other intruder?

Download and install the free Autoruns from Sysinternals. This will list every application that runs on startup. It is very descriptive and configurable and you might find the cause of your problem (and eliminate it) from the list that Autoruns compiles. BTW, running two virus scanners at the same time is NOT recommended. You should also consider installing SpywareBlaster . It too is free and is a tool which will prevent malware and spyware from being installed on you machine.

To add to Rebel's list, you could install the TeaTimer monitor (part of Spybot) in the hope of preventing this sort of download again.

You could perhaps download and install the MS AntiSpyware Beta, which might remove the problem for you? (You don't HAVE to allow the downloader to check your Windows XP for validity...)

I installed the ms beta spyware program. Is this a pretty good program. I was thinking of also installing Spy Sweeper from webroot. Is the ms one good enough or is it good idea to install Spy Sweeper also.

Applications such as Spybot Search and Destroy, LavaSoft AdAware, MS Anti Spyware Beta and Webroot Spy Sweeper don't bite each other, and each may find items overlooked by the others, so go ahead and try it.

    Hi Ralph,

You have acquired a browser hijacker. You need to run HijackThis and then post your log to one of the Forums and let them help you clean up your system.

I can't quite remember where I read it (I think it was ZDNet, but I can't find it now), but there recently was a evaluation of spyware which rated the effectiveness of different tools. The rated outcome indicated that a combination of MS Antispyware (at least in its pre-Microsoft Giant Software incarnation) and Webroot Spysweeper was the most effective at removing spyware.

Did you mean the article referred to in <post#=447496>post 447496</post#> (with a sequel referred to in <post#=451829>post 451829</post#>)?
