    System configuration (XP Home Sp2)

I am trying to speed up a friends computer by eliminating some of the programs that run on start-up. When I get into the System Config window and the Start-up Tab I am confronted by a long list of items. Is there somewhere I can go to find a list that explains each of these items and whether or not the item is essential to operation?

Take a look at Black Viper's List. It should provide all the information you need and some you'll probably never use. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

And here's a couple more that used to be mentioned occasionally here in The Lounge:

Thanx again guys. Checked out all three suggested sites and I really can work with the Sysinfo.org site
The Black Viper site could take me days just to peruse and I will do that over time.

Just keep in mind that, like spyware, you may need to check out more than one place looking for an answer. If that fails, Google on a filename or, as usual, ask here in The Lounge for someone may be familiar with a filename you're looking for. As we all know, some of the stuff that gets into Startup can be hard to fathom, especially if it scumware!
