the heading 1 has a subscript 1 as the num (OfficeXP)

    Hi

I noticed that in one of our templates the heading style 1 has a little 'subscript 1'. This effects when inserting cross-references to a paragraph the '1' is displayed in the cross-reference.

Searching on the web for something else, by accident I came across the heading style 1 little '1'. At the time it was'nt applicable therefore I quickly squimmed & read the article. It mentioned that the little '1' was an after effect from a when a Word document/or template became corrupt?

Has anyone else seen this behaviour? or know its cause?

    many thanks diana :-)

    Try the following:
    - Open the template.
    - Right-click Heading 1 in the style list.
    - Select Modify...
    - Select Format | Numbering...
    - Click Customize...
    - Clear the numbering for level 1.
    - Click OK (twice).
Does this get rid of the subscript 1?

    Further to my 1st post....

The heading 1 little '1' > when I go to the Style & Formatting > Heading 1> Format>Numbering>Customise>Font - the font size of the little '1' is size 1.
Heading 1 isnt to have any numbering.
The Heading 2 - is when the numbering is to start .

Have you tried clearing the number 1 in the Customize dialog?

    Hi Hans

    Yes this works.

I can amend the template & remove the little '1'.

On existing documents that were created using the template that has heading 1 wiht the little '1'. these documents will still have heading 1 with the little '1'. On these docs the users can manually remove the 1, (I can email out some instructions).

    many thanks for your help

The users also can use the Organizer dialog to selectively overwrite styles in the document from the template. Not sure of the fastest way to get to this dialog now that the task pane pops up for Format>Style..., but Tools>Macro>Macros>Organizer is one way.

Yet another possibility for existing documents is to select Tools | Templates and Add-Ins..., and to tick the "Automatically update styles in document" check box. (Once the styles have been updated, the check box can be cleared again.)
