    Drop Down Field (97)

Is there any way of creating a drop down field in a word document, without converting the whole doc into a form...?

You can use a part of a document as a form, by inserting section breaks and specifying which section to protect for forms in the Protect Document dialog. So you could have a dropdown from the Forms toolbar in a protected section, yet allow the user to type in other sections.

You can also use the combo box from the Control Toolbox. The document need not be protected for forms to use this one, but it's less easy to refer to the selected item elsewhere in the document. And since this combo box is an ActiveX control, it will cause a macro warning when the document is opened.
