Recovering deleted files (SP1)

I deleted some files from a USB memory stick. Is there a way of recovering any of them? Thanks.

Oh boy, I've never thought about this one. Take a look at PC Inspector here: PCinspector Data Recovery to see what it'll show you. I tried it with the stick from my camera, which I inserted in a USB connected SmartDisk Universal Reader. As you can see in the attachment, it seems to see deleted files but lists the condition as "poor" for most of them.

Recovering deleted files from a "USB memory stick" is no different from trying to recover deleted files from any other FAT-32 disk device.

If you have added or updated files since deleting the old files, you have probably re-used some of the clusters/sectors of the former files and perhaps overwritten one or more of the former files' directory entries. That's probably what the prognosis of "Poor" means.

Well, Al pointed you at a possible program! You'd get lots (many perhaps !) from Googling for recover deleted files , I would imagine.

I was under the impression that Windows had a facility for recovering deleted files. I guess this is not correct.

The Windows recovery mechanism is the trash can. As far as Windows is concerned once you empty the trash can or you by-pass it completely you don't want the file so it is "gone forever". But, files from removable devices don't go to the trash can. So, from a Windows viewpoint you're hosed.

I used your suggestion this morning, Al, and it worked great. My daughter-in-law was trying to delete one photo from the memory card on her camera, and accidentally deleted all of them. I immediately pulled the memory card out of the camera and logged on here to look for any suggestions, and PC Inspector Smart Recovery managed to salvage all the photos. I'm now the hero of the day.

I followed Al's link out of curiosity and found that they have developed a program specifically for memory sticks and cards. It is also .

Give the freebie I linked to a try. You might be impressed. I should have pointed out the AGE of the deleted files on my camera stick. You'll notice that some of them are pretty old deletes, so it's not surprising that they'd be hard to restore.
