Blue screen of Death (Win XP pro SP2)

My daughter's PC has recently started crashing approx once every couple of days. It is virus & malware free.

I have just seen the crash happening, and I got a view of a blue screen before the machine re-booted. I did not get a chance to read any text displayed there, but i was hoping that there will be a log file somewhere that will record its last rites!.

Can anyone tell me where to look please?

    Thanks

There might be something in the System Event Log, from Start => Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Event Viewer then click on System.

Check what has been set (or defaulted) in Start => Control Panel => System => Advanced => Startup and Recovery Settings, to see whether it is writing to the Event log and/or rebooting automatically, and set these, if needed, for the next event!

PS Fairly obviously, you DO want to write an event to the system log and you DON'T want to restart (at least for the present)...

To get information from blue screens...

Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Set all the available check marks at the bottom of this window.

To get started on looking at the information generated have a look at <!mskb=315263>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 315263<!/mskb>

Re: Blue screen of Death (Win XP pro SP2)

I've started to download the debugging progs, having read MSKB 315263. this looks mighty complicated, but in the meantime, I've got hold of the error codes that came up when the PC re-started.

I''ve attached this as an image below.

There are no entries on Google that match this code. Is there any where I can check these first?

    Thanks

My most recent update aside from Windows (non-automatic) updates, is Paperport 10.

Comfortable? Well, the thing is under my desk, and it's a bit dark in there.... But I did build it myself about three years ago.

Have you tried uninstalling Paperport? Have you tried a System Restrore to a time when things were reasonably stable? Also, how about shutting down, opening the PC, cleaning it, and checking all the cables and memory. If that does not help and you have more than one memory stick try removing one and seeing what happens. You could also try the Microsoft Windows Memory diagnostic - windiag.

Re: Blue screen of Death (Win XP pro SP2)

I have PaperPort v. 8 on my XP Pro SP2 machine, and found that it was causing crashes when I removed the autostart key in the Registry. Since then, I've reinstalled the drivers, and have learned to allow PaperPort to start up at boot up -- even though my scanner isn't connected most of the time. The crashes have stopped. I now just block bmupdate.exe from accessing the Internet with ZoneAlarm. Blocking it from connecting every five minutes or so seems to have no deleterious effect at all on PaperPort (but then, I don't use it!). It may be that PaperPort 10 runs similarly to version 8; the same approach may work for you.

Re: Blue screen of Death (Win XP pro SP2)

I found that the keyboard control from Netropa had been causing many of the crashes. I removed it. However, I continue to get other blue screen crashes when some programs try to access a CD/DVD drive (I think). However, I'm giving up on any followup on this particular thread, and living with the problem. This particular WinXP install is nearly three years old and p[robably full of junk. I'll probably take two days out of my life and backup/re-install nearly everything. Like moving the contents of a six bedroom house with a pickup truck that has no tailgate.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

Re: Blue screen of Death (Win XP pro SP2)

Just a suggestion or two that will save you lots of time in the long run:
When you get JUST XP installed, and have done all of the Windows Updates, make an image on DVD. Then, when you get all of your programs loaded, and the machine's running well, image it again. You will always be able to get back to that point in time, and won't have to put in quite as much time the next time a problem occurs. Having a base install backup,
then a full system backup, is the way to go...
