    Line numbers skip (2003)

We have a Word 2003 document that won't display line numbers in some parts. I hasten to add that (1) I didn't create this document, and (2) the formatting (styles, numbering and so on) run afoul of every lesson I've learned in this forum. The person or persons who created this document have no concept of Word styles or paragraph numbering. In terms of document formatting and paragraph numbering, we've got 40 pages of junk! My partner and I have the dubious honor of editing this mess. We tried to add line numbers for all the usual reasons, but we've hit this weird little snag. I used Page Setup > Line numbers... to display continuous line numbers from beginning to end

    What happens if you:
    - Select the entire document (Ctrl+A),
    - Select Format | Paragraph...
    - Activate the Line and Page Breaks tab.
    - Make sure that the Suppress line numbers check box is cleared. You may have to click it several times.
    - Click OK.
