Reducing Archive File Size (Outlook 97 SR2)

We have about a dozen users on our network and their Outlook .pst, archive, etc. folders are kept on the server. Some archive files are becoming very large. Is there a way to specify a maximum archive file size or to delete information over a certain age from the archive files?

Archive files are compressible with Zip type utilities. If an archive may have future business value (lawsuits and Sarbanes Oxley in the US come to mind), I'd be wary of deleting them, but you can Zip them and burn them onto CD's to get them off the server. There are also some strategies to reducing PST file size including removing attachments which are already saved to disk, search this forum.

My heavy usage of Outlook started with Outlook 98 - so this may not apply. If there is an Outlook Today folder, try right clicking on it and choosing Properties. Then drill down until you get to Compact, and ttry compacting the file. This can materially reduce PST size. HTH
