Firefox 1.0.1 released

Firefox 1.0.1 has been released. It contains a small number of bug fixes and a quite a few security updates.

You can also download international versions from the ftp site

Most of the changes are behind the scene so do not expect to see many differences - Unofficial Firefox 1.0.1 changelog

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

There is a potential problem that may cause Firefox to crash depending on how it was installed.

If you are experiencing a crash when entering text into the address bar, you can correct the problem by removing the autocomplete.xpt file from your Firefox components directory, for example in Windows XP it is usually C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxcomponents. To avoid this crash, do not install a new installer build on top of an older zipped build.

This problem seems to only be impacting zipped build users of previous releases installing installer builds of 1.0.1. If you install a zipped 1.0.1 on top of an earlier zipped build, things seem to be working, and if you install an installer build over a previous installer build then things seem to also work.

There will probably be a Firefox 1.0.2 release shortly to overcome this issue.

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

I just downloaded Firefox Setup 1.0.1.exe and ran it. No obvious problems in nearly a day!

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

    I "uninstalled" Firefox 1.0 then installed v1.0.1.
    Everything works OK as before.

    Have a Great day!!!

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

    Tony55,

I installed the latest Firefox version today and accidentally made it my default browser, which I didn't want to do. I couldn't find a way to change it back so IE was the default browser so I did a system restore to accomplish this. Uninstalling Firefox didn't even help once I reinstalled it, it remained the default browser until after the System restore. I found the option to make Firefox check if it is the default browser but that only seems to work if it isn't already the default browser. How could I have changed the default back to IE without having to do the System Restore?

    Thanks.

    In Internet Explorer select "Tools>Options..."
The Programs tab has the option for IE to check that it is the default browser.

Another method if you are using Windows XP is to select "Set program access and defaults" from the Start menu. This includes options to set the default browser.

I must be especially dense this morning; I have no idea what that means. However, I do know that trying the "Check Now" button under Tools>Options...>Advanced>Updates says there are no updates, so rather than be an early adopter, perhaps I'll just wait a few days until I can use the button.

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

The auto-update option will not be available for a few days at least. Currently the only way to install the update is to download the new version of Firefox.

The problem I highlighted will only effect a relatively small number of people since the majority of people installed Firefox by using the .exe installer method. The download link on Firefox product page is for the .exe installer. The option for the zipped version of Firefox is available from the developers section so most people will not know it exists.

Thank you. I knew it had to be somewhere but I couldn't find it.

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

FWIW it always seems to have been a standing rule that new versions of FirefoxPhoenixMozilla should not be installed "on top of" old versions. The usual routine is to back up the existing installation by copying it elsewhere in WE, delete the current "original" and then install the new version to the old/existing path. If all goes well - depending on your testing period - then delete the backup. HTH

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

The auto-update for the Windows versions are starting to appear though the size of the download is almost the same as the size of the main installation files. For those with the en-US version of Firefox 1.0 you should receive a notification that an update is available providing you have not disabled the option to check for updates. Alternatively you can use the "Check Now" button.

Many of the international versions, including en-GB, have not been released but should appear very soon. Checking through the Mozilla ftp sites there are about 40 international versions of Firefox 1.0.1 that have been created but awaiting to be signed off for official release.

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

Most of the localisations have just been released. They have just appeared on Mozilla's Californian ftp servers, ftp://207.200.85.49/pub/mozilla.org/...eleases/1.0.1/ and so should be available soon on the Firefox download page.

For those eagerly awaiting the Welsh language version this has been delayed due to a bug concerning the update file.

    Tony

It's probably a stupid question, but what are the differences between Firefox 1.0.1 en-US and en-GB?
And can the latter be installed over the former without uninstalling?
And will all the extensions work? (mine are GoogleBar and Popup ALT Attribute)?
And if you have en-GB will the automatic updates happen?

And where could I have looked up all the answers to these questions ?

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

    John

Most of the differences are cosmetic, these include:

British spellings within the menus and help file

Default language settings within the options dialogue set to en-GB

UK specific search plug-ins

Auto-update system set to look for en-GB updates[/list]If you are going to install a different localisation, it is best to uninstall the previous version first. You should have no problems with extensions. Automatic updates will work for the en-GB version though depending on the nature of the update it may not be available until a few days after the en-US updates are released.

    Re: Firefox 1.0.1 released

Thanks, Tony -- it doesn't really seem to be worth the bother to have en-GB rather than en-US, since the differences appear to be so minimal!
