drop-down menus have disappeared (Office Professional 2000)

I somehow got into a view where there are no pull-down menus. don't know how it happened. Would like to know how to get my menus back in Word.

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

You're probably in Full Screen view. Try pressing the Esc key, or bump the mouse pointer against the top of the screen, the menu bar should pop up (select View | Full Screen).

on my start menu I have "New Office Document" Along with Word Icon for "Blank Document" In the window is "Normal.dot"

could this be the problem? if I find the Winword icon it opens on Winword.exe

I don't think that this causes the problem.

Do you see a toolbar? If so, right-click it and select Customize...
Activate the Toolbars tab of the Customize dialog.
Tick the check box for Menu Bar, then click OK.

If you don't see a toolbar, or if the above doesn't help, try this:
Press Alt+F11 to activate the Visual Basic Editor.
Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window.
Type Commandbars("Menu Bar").Visible = True and press Enter.
Type Commandbars("Menu Bar").Position = msoBarTop and press Enter.
Switch back to Word to see if it worked.

Do you have any toolbars at all? If so, try this: right-click at the far right, beyond all the toolbars, and you should get a long list of toolbar names with Customize... at the bottom. Choose Customize, change to the Toolbars tab, make sure Menu Bar is checked, highlight it, and click Reset and then Close. Does the menu come back?

If you don't have any toolbar area at all, you could do the same thing by starting with Alt+F8 to call up the Macros dialog, change the drop-down list (right after Macros in) to Word Commands, then highlight ToolsCustomizeMenus and click Run.

If that whole idea doesn't work, it may be that the information stored for Word's toolbars has become corrupted. We have a Star post that walks through the process of finding out where corruption lies: <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word,197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word<!/post>. Hope this helps.
