    Outlook 98 error message (W98SE)

I know I'm in the stone age but Outlook 98 has been trouble free for me. Until today. I keep getting an error message. A screenshot of the message is attached.
    I use Firefox for browsing.
A mail arrived to day with a message from my ISP saying that a .scr file had been stripped from the message. Could something have got through AGV anti virus and a number of anti-spyware progs I have installed?

    Any help appreciated.

An .scr file is a Screensaver file. These tend to be used in mass e-mailings for propagating viruses or trojans. The ones installed by Windows itself are not to be worried about. Possibly, someone who has your e-mail address has become infected and was unwittingly trying to send the file on to you.

As for the error message, it seems as if one of the messages you received contains some form of Javascript. Can you check the messages you received on the day that you first got the error message to see if one contains unusual formatting?

I never used Outlook 98, but here's the modern wisdom: you do not want to run scripts in the bodies of e-mail messages, period! In the newer versions of Outlook, you visit the Tools>Options... dialog's Security tab and select the Restricted Zone. This uses the settings from IE to lock down messages so they can't run scripts, invoke ActiveX controls, etc. If it is possible to do this in Outlook 98, you should do so immediately.

    As a by-product of this change, you won't see any more script errors. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Thanks. I knew it could (probably was) a nasty. I deleted the original immediately. It was today - and that's when the prob manifested itself.
Any ideas what might have been done to the pc - or how I might find out?

    Thanks again.

Thanks. Following your advice I think I've cured it from that point of view - but do you think there might be anything lurking on the pc that might bite again. Full checks with av and spy progs say no?

    On that basis, probably not.
