Word wants to save unchanged doc (2002 SP-2)

Why is it that with some documents merely opening them creates some change that Word asks if I want to save when I close the document? One letter in particular has an embedded Excel spreadsheet, but this is not updated or changed in any way when I simply open and close the Word document (or is it?).

That's correct...it is updated. Basically, fields are updated on open, print, and print preview. Also, it could be the Excel spreadsheet that's causing the "update", and not the Word document at all. If you want to find out, delete the spreadsheet and save the file to a new name. Close and reopen. Still "changing"? If so, you likely have a date field or something.

It may be that Excel recalculates formulas in the spreadsheet when it is opened, so it is 'changed' even though the calculations are the same as before.
