Wont start up (xp)

Hi I have a Packard Bell 4606. My son switched the plug off and since then when I try to switch comp on it goes onto screen :- start in safe mode, normal or last known good working config. I tried all these but it keeps going back to this screen. any one help please.

Bad news - seemly Windows system files on your hard drive are damaged.

If you have Windows Installation CD - it is not a problem: just boot from CD, choose Install (not Repair) on the first prompt and then, when Setup recognizes your installation, choose Repair. Or, if you choose Repair on the first prompt and it brings you to Command prompt, type chkdsk /r (it is better than chkdsk /f).

But, if you do not have Windows Installation CD (you have pre-installed OEM version of Windows), you can use Restore CD that came with computer. Unfortunately, all your documents and installed programs will be gone - it will restore your computer to the state you bought it.

Have you tried to use scandisk which will restore system files only and maybe get you out of this jam?

Go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" ( without the quotes )

It will start running and WILL ask you for your System CDs to retrieve missing or blown system files.

I wonder if that will run under DOS prompt?
Never tried it that way.

Bob, Windows XP (as Windows 2000 and NT) does not run under DOS (as Windows 95-98-Me does), and all system WinXP files are hidden.

I would suggest to ask friends with Windows XP Installation CD or computer repair shop to recover your music files...

...And burn them to CD to avoid data loss during the next crash.

Thanks kaplinb but the DOS thing was just a muse on my part.

The balance of your post should be directed to the originator of this thread.

I'm assuming that means that he pulled the plug out and crashed the system, and now it won't boot at all. If this is the case and you don't have an XP install CD and want to preserve your data, you'll most likely have to remove the hard drive and either install it in another computer and see if you can copy off the data that is important to you to a CD, DVD or other removable media, or buy a second hard drive and install it in your machine, setup the old hard drive as a slave, then install Windows on the new hard drive from the disks provided by your manufacturer and then attempt to restore your data from the old hard drive.

Maybe it's time to put your pictures (and all other valuable data) on a cd or dvd now ?

Excellent !!! I'm glad it worked out and you will survive to shoot more pictures of your kids and your wife will not have to shoot you !! I do think you should take Francois' advice and burn those pictures to a CD or send them out to one of the online picture services to have it done. Wal Mart does a decent job.

Now, after you get the pictures burned to a CD you can format that drive and use it for storage or just leave it as a slave and use it as is. Personally, I'd wipe it clean and use it for backups.
