    Copy Path from open window

    Hi

Does anyone know of a program, preferably a free download, that adds a "Copy Path" option globally to the context menu.
What I am after is to be able to right click on an Excel Worksheet, a Word Document, a Photo Paint edit window, etc. and copy the last used path for that item to the clipboard.
Maybe it's not possibe. I have found many that will work from within Windows Explorer but that is not what I'm looking for. I found one that might do what I want but it is part of a package that costs more than I would pay even if I knew it would work.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Have a Great day!!!

Re: Copy Path from open window

I think there are several issues here. First, the application must provide the means to add to the context menu. Then it must have the capability of exposing the path/ filename. Finally, a means must be provided to send the information to the clipboard.

For a MS application that incorporates VBA, this is possible using a reference to the Microsoft Forms 2.0 Object Library. For instance, in Word:

    Sub PathToClipboard()
    Dim MyData As DataObject
    Set MyData = New DataObject
    MyData.SetText ActiveDocument.Path & Application.PathSeparator & ActiveDocument.Name
    MyData.PutInClipboard
    Set MyData = Nothing
    End Sub

DataObject requires the reference to Forms2. If there is a UserForm present, this reference should be there anyway. I found the attached (from somewhere?) can send a text string to the clipboard, using pure API calls, not needing the Forms2 reference. Looking at it some more, it looks like a case of using an artillery battery to open the front door, but it might be of use.

Alan, you probably know more about AutoIt than I, so can you add to this? I was thinking of AutoIt's "Reveal" mode, but on first glance, it doesn't include the current file's PATH. Do you think it might be possible to add the path? At any rate, AutoIt bears some more reading on my part...

    Hi Ken,

I know this is probably one of those programs you're not after, but I found it pretty useful: ClipPath v2.1.

    Thanks Alan, Al and Diegol

Excel and Word are the two applications that I would most use this with.
Alan's idea seems to be the way for me to go. I have someone familiar with VB/VBA close by who I'll try to cajole into taking it on for me. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Copy Path from open window

OK, I'm not sure that I understand exactly what you are wanting, so this may be useless advice. But, I just open the File Open dialog in Excel 2003 and Right-Clicked on a file. I noticed that the context menu includes the "Send To" menu. On my Send To menus, I have (Send To) Clipboard as Name. I user it frequently. It sends the full path of the clipboard, and then you can paste it where you want to. I'd like it better if it gave me the UNC path rather than the DSO path, but it's still pretty useful.

Now, the thing is, I think that feature can from the SendtoX utility that was packaged in the Windows 2000 powertoys. Howvever I'mnot sure if it's still available since the Windows XP powertoys don't have this.

Hmm. Looks like it may be available here:

Re: Copy Path from open window

    Hi Jim

Here's an example of what I'm trying to do:
I have one of several Excel worksheets open and want to copy the path to this current worksheet to the clipboard.
I can do a Save and then I would like to be able to right click and have a "Copy Path" option available.
I can do this by drilling down to the file in Explorer and using one of the many "Copy Path" utilities available but I'm wondering if there isn't a simpler way.
BTW I'm stuck with Excel/Word 2000 on an NT4 computer.

It's not really that big a deal. I was just wondering......

I'm sorry to beat on this one, Ken, but have you tried that ClipPath utility. It will do EXACTLY what you're asking - either during the File, Open or File, Save As cycles. I use Office 2000 and it works in both Word and Excel.

The way I read your request, particularly in view of your comment: <hr>I have found many that will work from within Windows Explorer but that is not what I'm looking for. <hr>I understood that you want to be able to right-click on an opened file (child) window - a file already open in one of the apps you mention - and be able to send the path direct to the clipboard from that action alone. I presumed you wanted to avoid Windows Explorer or any extra application dialogs. Is this correct?

Re: Copy Path from open window

I have customised the menu bar on Word, Excel etc so that the Properties Command Key is always available. The first tab of this shows the File name and Path so they can be selected.

While you still have the Customise Menu dialog open it's worth right clicking on the newly inserted Properties icon on the Menu bar and removing the ampersand before the 'i' in the button text. This allows the continued use of Alt+I to access the Insert menu.

Re: Copy Path from open window

    Hokay

    Al
I've downloaded and tried "Clip Path". It comes close to what I want except that it gives the drive "Name" rather than the "Letter". I can live with that.

    Alan
"Is this correct?" - Yes. It's been a long time since I've done any programing and I'm afraid I don't understand your sample VBA code . I'll try and get Mary to look at it and see if she can set it up for me. (I get her to program the VCR too.) <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Your suggestion would probably work for me too, but it's not what I had in mind.

Thanks all of you for your suggestions.

Re: Copy Path from open window

    Ken

I've attached a sample Word doc to give the idea. It contains a blank form to "force" the Forms2 reference to appear. Otherwise you can set the reference yourself, as mentioned earlier. This one only adds a context menu for itself. It is created when this doc opens and is destroyed when it closes, and only appears for "ThisDocument", as it stands at the moment. You might want to include it in the Normal template if/ once it's suitable.

I know Alan got your original request right on and you would prefer to do something after the file is already open and onscreen. But I didn't experience the quote above. When I choose the ClipPath entry it offers both backslash and forward slash choices - did you choose the backslash version? Here's a few of the clips I got in my testing, all containing the drive letter and full (correct) path:

    Data_StoreMicrosoftExcelATH Tax.xls
    C:tempAEH Defrag.txt
    Data_StoreMicrosoftWordAEH_Test.doc

Re: Copy Path from open window

    Hi Alan

I downloaded your attachment to one of my local drives and opened it.
I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but I don't see anything, either in the form or on right clicking, that would indicate a Copy Path.

However, while playing with your document, I opened the Toolbar Options and loaded the "Web" toolbar.
Guess what....there's the path. I removed the other buttons and now a click on the path to select it and a CTL-C copies it to the clipboard.
Again, not quite what I wanted, but it works. It works the same in Excel.

Re: Copy Path from open window

    Hi Al

The drive letter is shown if the file is on one of my local drives. The drive name is shown if it is on one of the server drives.
The same with the path in the "Web" Toolbar (See my reply to Alan above).
    Not a big problem.

I now have some options for doing this.
    Thanks all.
