Backup profiles (Firefox 1.x)

One thing I recommend all Firefox users do is to backup their profile. There are several utilities that can help you do this including:

MozBackup is probably the most famous though this useful utility is no longer being developed. It can also be used for the Mozilla suite and Thunderbird.
Bookmark Backup is an extension that automatically backs up bookmarks and other settings/files from your profile.
BackupFox 0.6 is a newcomer in this field and offers a method to backup and restore Firefox profiles. This one is under development and future versions may include Thunderbird profiles.

O how I wish I had used one of these to back up about 100-150 Bookmarks! I never realised just how much time it would take to recreate them, always presuming that I can remember them...

Which one do you use? Could you convince me that I need to back up the complete Firefox Profile rather than just Bookmarks?

    Thanks!

    John

PS An intuitive restore would be greatly appreciated...

I use Bookmark Backup and despite its name it backs up most of the profile but not the extensions. The screenshot shows what it backs up. The backup folder contains 7 folders called Monday-Sunday, and whenever Firefox is closed it overwrites the files in that days folder with the most recent versions, giving you 7 days of backups.

Using Bookmark Backup, I back-up all the settings from the profile. In addition I keep a copy of the .xpi files for the extensions that I use in case I need to re-install them. By doing this if I ever need to re-create a profile it can be done in a few minutes.

For info MozBackup is again being developed though it will be for Windows only.

Yes, the backup seems to work fine!

It's not immediately obvious how restores are done, though...

(Edited by tony55 on 13-May-05 17:50. )
To restore a profile you need to copy the files from your backup into the profile folder. For details of the profile folder see Profile Folder - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

Added: MozBackup and BackupFox both include options to restore a profile from backups that they created.

    Re: Backup profiles (Firefox 1.x)

    Hi Tony

I've tried BackupFox 0.73 several times. It tells me it has successfully created a backup but I can't find it in any of the destination folders I've tried, including the default program folder.
There aren't many options for me to mess up. Any suggestions?

    Have a Great day!!!

    Re: Backup profiles (Firefox 1.x)

    Hi Ken

I have only tried BackupFox once and it created a backup file with a name based on the structure of profilename_date.firefox and that was stored in the same folder as the program file. The backup file was a zip file with a .firefox extension.

    Re: Backup profiles (Firefox 1.x)

    Hi Tony

There is no file created in any of the target folders including the program folder.
A search on my drive for ".firefox" shows no results.

I guess I'll have to try one of the others or wait untill something else comes along.

    Have a Great day!!!
