Not sure what your "goal" is, but you could in a separate cell install a hyperlink to the pdf.

2. You cannot insert pictures into a cell comment, if that is what you mean by "to install into a comment a picture". Cell comments are text only.

Edited by HansV to delete incorrect statement #2 - thanks to Jan Karel Pieterse for pointing out my error.

    1. Excel doesn't know how to handle PDF files, so you must either take a screenshot of the PDF file (while it is open in Adobe Reader), or use other software.

    Re: Comment Picture (Excel 2000)

    My goal is this,

I work for a newspaper, we have created a spreadsheet solution for tracking inventory, in this case we are tracking from 2 two locations. We use a shared Excel workbook, to track images from where the page is made, to our location, where it is printed. For each page of the paper there is identification I use color to indicate where the page is in the system, thus giving us an accounting of our edition before it goes to press. Plus giving me an exact count of certain properties of each edition, based on color in the cell.

From where the editiorial staff and compositors do there stuff it takes three different applications before the page actually arrives on my our door for production. Where the problem is, is that there was no way of seeing that page until I discovered PDF's in a folder on the main frame. What I would like to do is see each page of the paper before it is transmitted to us, when we make printing plates for the press, gather a bunch of data for the ink settings, and also proof a page, so that the printer have something to go by when setting press color.

In our system a Excel template, on our worksheet, I would like to load a picture of the paper right into the comment. My plan was working great until I hit this roadblock of converting the file, I thought it might be nice if Excel would convert it for me, but it looks like it need to have a separate application, or have those PDF's, converted before I see them.

Anyway, any input is appreciated, I have to say that many in here have helped me to accomplished a lot, when I first started this it was my first real exposure to Excel, and VBA.- like you couldn't tell

    Thanks,
    Darryl.

(Edited by sdckapr on 03-Mar-05 13:17. Added PS and example)
Why does it have to be in the comment?

As I said, if you can just use a cell in another column, you can create a link to the pdf and not worry about any conversion at all. Clicking the link will open acrobat reader and open the pdf for viewing.

To put the pdf into the comment would entail converting each pdf to a graphic image (eg GIF) and saving it. Then you would have to run a macro to change/set each of the comment's "Shape.Fill.UserPicture" to a particular graphic and make sure the comment is large enough so the pdf is "readable". It is "doable", but I am not sure how crazy you will be about the results...

PS here is a file with a comment in A1. The comment contains a page from a pdf file saved as a gif. Note at this size it is a large comment and still is difficult to read. It is also more work than just creating a link to a pdf file that you have saved.
