When you know you shoudn't

Edited by <!profile=StuartR>StuartR<!/profile> to make post link live. See <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>

All my instincts told me I was wrong but.... I was searching for a particular music track (obscure Beach Boys from years ago) and was too impatient to wait to see an old friend who I knew had an LP stored in his loft somewhere....so found a site with mp3 downloads. I hesitated but....well you can guess....at least saved it to desktop first and scanned it with NAV and seemed ok ..and it was. A couple of days later ran the usual adaware & spybot virus scan....over 80 yes EIGHTY ad/spyware, trojan, tracking cookies etc. Most were cleaned out by adware/spybot & NAV apart from 5 that would not get deleted without a lot of time and effort searching (see <post#=456458>post 456458</post#>.) So I suppose what I'm trying to say is that you can never be too careful and always expect the worst when you visit sites that you're not sure should be trusted.

Re: When you know you shoudn't

I would think that the MP3 itself, and its archive file would have been clean, especially since nothing was picked up by NAV. What you probably fell for was some sort of "download assistant" or similar, which you allowed to be installed on your system. Maybe you could give us the URL of the site to get a better idea.

Edited by Bigaldoc to add: On the chance that your link DOES possibly lead to trouble, I'm going to remove it from the post to prevent possible "damage" for other Loungers.

I think you're right, I went here to start (link removed by Bigaldoc) and possibly followed a link from there I cant honestly remember, anyway lesson learnt.

Al, where's your sense of adventure ??!!?? How can we learn how to help if we can't experience these things first hand ?? Like Alan, I'm sure the file itself was clean. The garbage likely came aboard as drive-by trash from a hot link on the site that activates when the window opens or when your cursor just passes over it, or, as Alan said, as an add-on to the DL, either announced with an option to install it or not. Or no notification at all and just dumped on the system as a "thanks for stopping by" gift. Any time you have to dig through links to get to a file you want, you should be VERY suspicious and actually, look elsewhere for your file.

BTW - Which Beach Boys tune was it you were looking for ??

Re: When you know you shoudn't

Perhaps Alan and/or Doc could request that Jeff email the link to them.
They could then be adventurous, check out the site, and let post their findings.

Have a Great day!!!

Re: When you know you shoudn't

Many "regulars" of Woody's Lounge, and of this forum in particular, will have enough sense to provide their PC's with multiple layers of protection, and to be careful when surfing the net, but - witness the number of problems mentioned here and in other discussion groups - many others are careless, or simply don't know enough. It's better to be on the safe side and avoid the possibility that PCs become infected through a link in a Lounge post.

Hans & Ken,

I guess I put the 'Grin" smilie in the wrong place on that post. I was trying to come across tongue-in-cheek (or "cheeky" if you will). If the link had been left active I would have PM'd a Mod to have it pulled. Most of us are well covered for such adventures, but we shouldn't be leaving links to malware lying around the Lounge for the unsuspecting or unprepared to click on. Sorry if I created any confusion.

Re: When you know you shoudn't

Even those who are protected and careful can receive these "gifts". I got a viewpoint browser from somewhere, and I haven't been able to track down how it arrived. My protections raised alerts when it tried to install itself (it tried to change my registry settings *before* it popped up the Eula window), and I had no problem thwarting it, but it just shows that it can happen.

Re: When you know you shoudn't

To all you curious souls, there was one other aspect of the link (which was in incorrect Lounge syntax and thus NOT "hot") was that the URL had a "bad word" in it which I thought might offend some Loungers.

Re: When you know you shoudn't

I think this can serve as another reminder to us all to be a bit more careful and consider the implications before we post some of these links. While all of our intentions are good, even the best of intentions can sometimes be misconstrued or misunderstood. I like to think that I can refer my grandmother as well as my children to the Lounge and not be concerned that they will be offended or upset by what they find here. So far, I haven't been disappointed and I'm sure I never will !!!

Re: When you know you shoudn't

My apologies. You saw something that I never noticed in the address, depends how you read it I suppose. Oh and the track was "Shut Down" ...I think maybe thats the best thing to do with this thread now.

Re: When you know you shoudn't

Well, in all fairness to Jeff, the OP, it was me who asked for the URL, so that I could (tentatively) check out the site. I didn't think of the possibility of a bad word in the link text though, epitomy of innocence that I am . I was prepared to chance my defences on a casual look, but didn't find anything obvious there BTW.

Maybe SnipURL could be of use to loungers if URL names are "questionable". Mind you, this same method is used to lure the unsuspecting to junk sites too... so who knows?

Re: When you know you shoudn't

I don't think that anyone felt Jeff had done anything wrong or that pulling the URL was a form of reprimand. Al was just doin' his job and protecting the integrity of the Lounge. I was chiding Al for what I perceived as "babysitting" us and protecting us fron that nasty site. I never saw the URL but was miffed that I couldn't go there and see what was going on for myself. Never thinking about the others who might go there from that link and get their system trashed.

I've had post pulled for similar reasons and understand that we, as Loungers, have to take responsibility for the links we provide. Not "legal" responsibility, but "Lounge" responsibility. To do our best to link to sites that are not offensive to the "general public". None of us does so intentionally, I know, but what I was saying is that this is a good opportunity for all of us to give some thought to the issue. Blame is for God and small children. I haven't found either here in the Lounge.
