    Re: shut down

First step would be to ensure that the "Shut Down" option is selected in the "Shut Down Windows" menu, i.e. the list that appears after clicking StartShutdown.

If this doesn't work post details of your PC, although I don't think this is hardware.

Had the same problem as Chewitt for a long while, don't know what caused but it disappeared after I did a re-install.

    Re: shut down

I've had the same problem now in 98SE (4.10.2222 A) for over a year. Its annoying along with the triple blue screens on (attempted) shut down which prompt for key presses and the occaisional crash to boot which I blame on IE, but probably stem from a basic clash in virtual memory of the OS. If anyone's got a solution for this one I'd be grateful as I've lived with it so long its part of my personal psychological stress map.

Are you running on a network or stand-alone?

    Re: shut down

I run a belkin direct link USB network between two machines, nothing sophisticated just MS Networks. We also use the second USB port on the machine (PII) for ISDN. I don't really worry about the problems to be honest the jobs so boring (Database Services) it gives me something to curse about, but obviously any suggestions will be gratefully received. I'm waiting to upgrade to ME during the next funding round, so I waste no time solving the OS problems, we had to ignore when we were busy.

    Re: shut down

I asked about the network situation as I have heard of problems with Netware and possible use of network cards that detect a 'wake-up' call causing the pc to re-start.

    Otherwise - any AV software?

    Leif missed one link, <A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q238/0/96.ASP>Q238096</A>.

While trying to follow these notes I went to the BIOS and disabled the Quick Boot mode. The system has now shutdown without a murmur 8-10 times since. This was the ONLY change I made.

Got my fingers crossed now. (Seems the best policy) <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
