Hi Kim and welcome to the Lounge

Having 64 processes running is not unusual. For a description of the processes see http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and http://www.answersthatwork.com/Taskl...s/tasklist.htm

If you have Norton and McAfee anti-virus products then it is best not to run them at the same time as they may conflict with each other.

I am not sure about the ghost window or why you are being pinged but if you have not already done so, then I also recommend running some anti-spyware programs such as Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy for details see <post#=296439>post 296439</post#>.
You may also want to consider trying some other anti-spyware packages since no one product detects all malware, for example you can try Microsoft AntiSpyware (Beta) and Spy Sweeper, a commercial product that offers a free 30-day trial.

Answering the question "what does it mean when it says your computer has been pinged by an isp address"

Ping is a network tool that is used to check that you can communicate with another computer. It is also used by hackers to see what computers are responding so they can try to attack them, so most firewalls are configured to discard any incoming ping without responding.

If you display a Command window and type
    <code>Ping www.wopr.com</code>
you will get a response that tells you how long it took www.wopr.com to respond to your network packets. If you try to do this to <code>www.microsoft.com</code> then it will return the error message "Request timed out" because they have ignored the request.

If you take Tony up on his suggestions just be sure to read closely. Microsoft has made more and more processes interdepdent so that disabling a seemingly innocuous service may disable something else you want. BlackViper does a pretty good job explaining this. I would also recommend that if you decide to disable services that you don't do more than two or three at a time. Keep track of what you've done and let you system run for a few days to a week (or however long it is until you can be reasonably sure that you've done all your normal tasks) until you try any more.

Re: task manager processes (win xp sp2)

I had so many (41) that I couldn't get online (dialup), so my ISP guy gave me this list of necessary things, and cut the list to 16 - So far, no problems that I know of:
Here's the list if you want to try it:
    CSRSS
    EXPLORER
    NETINFO
    LSASS
    SERVICES.EXE
    SMSS
    SPOOLSV
SVCHOST (there are 5 of these)
    SYSTEM
    SYSTEM IDLE PROCESSES
    TASKMGR
    WINLOGON
Hope this helps and good luck

I don't think you can make one list that will work for all users, it depends on what software you have. Anti virus software, for example will be in the list of processes, and of course people use different AV software.
