Date formating in charts (2002 sp-2)

I am attempting to format dates in a chart. The format will not take. I have entered the custom format MM/DD HH:MM:SS, however I still see 03/07/2005 13:15:22. Can I not have the cell formated one way and the chart another.

Where are you changing the format? I assume the dates are axis labels; if you want to change the format, double click the axis, or click once on the axis, then select Format | Selected Axis. In the Format Axis dialog, activate the Number tab, select the Custom category and enter the desired format. Make sure that the Link to Source check box is clear, then click OK.

If this doesn't help, make sure that the source data consists of dates, not of text values looking like dates. Text values cannot be formatted.

Thanks. I feel silly. They were not dates, but rather text. Normally I import from Oracle but I was using a GUI query tool which exports to Excel. I just found that it changes the data type. hmmm.

    Thanks again.

This is a common problem when importing data from other applications.

A quick way to convert a column of text data is:
    - Select the column with text values.
    - Select Data | Text to Columns.
    - Click Delimited, then Finish.

If it is text dates that are being converted to formal dates, eg. 03242004 that must be converted to 03/24/2004, it is also important to step to Step 3 of the text to columns feature and specify the option DATE, ensuring the option for the correct date style is selected in the dropdown. If the imported values are in mmddyyy format and you choose the DMY format in the dropdown, it will cause errors and not convert well.
