Folder options won't stick

Normally, when I opened a folder from one of my created shortcuts, the Explorer "Folders" were displayed on the left. Now, the "Tasks" are displayed instead. I've tried changing it to "Folders" and then clicking on "Tools/Folder Options/View" and clicking both "Apply to all Folders" and "Reset Default", but the Explorer folders (tree) isn't retained.

How can I get this preference to stick?

I'm using Win XP SP-2.

If it is any further help, if I got into "Folder Options" and click on "Show common tasks in folders", that sticks; Tasks are displayed on the left. However, if I check, "Use windows classic view", neither the Tasks nor Folders are displayed. If I then go into "View" and click on "Folders" and then into "Folder Options" again and "View" and "Apply to all folders", neither is displayed when using either "Show common tasks" or "Use windows classic view". Very strange!

Oh, and one other even stranger anomaly. When I had this window open and half my message typed in, I opened one of my linked folders and clicked on the "Folders" icon on the windows Toolbar. The folders were displayed on the left, but my browser (IE 6.0) flickered and everything that I had typed was erased.

Jeff,

Even though you have SP-2, check this out XP forgets your folder view settings.

Thanks Joe,

I tried this registry change but unfortunately it didn't resolve the issue. The "Folders" still don't stick.

That seems to be an abbreviated version of the fix. Take a look at <!post=this Starpost,252256>this Starpost<!/post> for some other things you may have to do as well.

Al,

The starpost needs to be updated to reflect that XP SP-2 increased the default Bag value to 5000.

Al,

I will have to try the items in the post you refer to because that always bothers me too.

But as a related item is the issue of displaying the Status Bar. I saw your post of a year (?) ago, referring to a still older post, about some other registry keys. I tried it and it does not seem to have worked. I deleted the old settings (saved them first and backed up the reg) and saw Win recreated the reg keys. Didn't have a chance to compare old vs new. Any further ideas?

I also wonder if it was intended that those settings would also apply to Int Expl, where I also want the status bar on.

thks

Fred

Funny you should ask this question - I had forgotten about the Windows Explorer status bar, and I'll be doggoned if mine isn't turned OFF again. It was one of the things I thought I had somehow fixed by deleting the "Bags" registry keys. Maybe there is something to the fact that SP2 may have upset the apple cart on this one fix. I don't know and am about to try the fix again to see what happens. (BTW, I hardly ever use IE so I can't say if it was "fixed" way back the last time.)

Hi Al,

do you mean you "fixed" the status bar a year ago (or whenever it was) and now it's off again?

> Maybe there is something to the fact that SP2 may have upset the apple cart on this one fix.
I'm not running SP2 on this computer.

> I don't know and am about to try the fix again to see what happens.
OK. let us know.

For whatever it's worth, I compared each of the keys I exported when I was having the problem with the "regenerated" version that Windows created. The comparison was at a very crude level: I opened the reg files in Word to do a comparison. However, I didn't even bother with that. The old keys were 66 and 180 pages of stuff while the regenerated keys were each 3 pages of stuff. So the offending keys that prevent the Status bar from staying on are somewhere in those 3 pages - if your theory (or whose ever it was) is correct. Maybe if I had done this sooner, it would have been smaller.

In the [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellNoRo amBags] key, there are numberous subkeys that seem like they repeat for a bunch of items (ie, Bags7, Bags15 and Bags16, etc). One of the items under each of those is a Status word. In the current reg keys that were regen'd, the value is 0xffffffff and there's only about 4 Bags. In the old key (in addition to there being a lot more Bags), the Status word was 0x00000000 or 0xffffffff, depending on the Bag. Not sure if even the Status word has anything to do with the Status Bar or what Bag applies to what.

For the [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellNoRo amBagMRU], I don't see anything that obviously relates to the Status Bar.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Of course, all my explorer windows are opening now with the Stat Bar on.

Thks.

Fred
