    IE 5.5 Install Fails

Suddenly our office is experiencing a rash of problems with IE 5.5 SP1. New installs or updates may appear to complete but IE won't run and nothing that depends on it will run. You can't uninstall it and it won't let you reinstall. The machines are all running NT 4.0 SP6a on a Novell network and with Office 2000 SR1 installed. There doesn't seem to be any common denominator and reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling everything has been the only fix anyone could come up with.

I personally haven't ever had a problem with my installation on my office machine or my laptop, but this seems to be spreading. Virus checking turns up nothing and the anti-virus and other non-essential services were turned off before the installation was started, so that isn't the culprit. Any ideas?

    Re: IE 5.5 Install Fails

I've seen something that may be related. A particular band of PCs running both Win95 & Win98 (not NT), if I tried to update from IE3.? to IE5, the OS got screwed to such an extent that the only cure was to FDISK and all that jazz!

The only solution I found was to go IE4 and then IE5.5.

    Re: IE 5.5 Install Fails

Is there anything in the install.log to give a clue?
    Does deleting the install.log allow a re-install?

(I'm going from memory here - I'm fairly sure I ended up with an IE install directory ...tempIE5(?)... with an install.log in it - plus a small .txt file saying I could delete the temp directory but would have download it again if I wanted to re-install...
    On W2K, BTW)

Part of the problem seems to be that the temp directory isn't getting created at all! Messages come back saying the installer can't find the temp directory or can't create the temp directory, and one even came back saying there was a syntax error. IE seems to think it's installing itself and it appears to be talking to the registry, but something isn't working. <img src=/S/crybaby.gif border=0 alt=crybaby width=15 height=15>
