ccApp.exe & major slow down (XP sp2)

Yesterday my main home computer slowed down to a near halt. Before that, my wife said that there was a Norton error, but doesn't remember what it said. When looking at the Task Manager, ccApp.exe is using up 98% of the CPU and the Performance bar is maxed out...non-stop. Now when I click anything, it takes a good 1-3 minutes before it responds. Is this a Norton issue that can be corrected somehow?

I've run SpyBot several times and nothing major was found.

Help...

Have you tried re-booting? Do you run LiveUpdate regularly?

Oh, yea. Several times. And I run Norton updates at least once per week.
Everything runs fine in safe mode too.

Have you run a full system scan with NAV? You may want to try an on-line scan such as Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan.

I was able to log in as a separate user on the system that doesn't have all the programs loaded, but has full admin rights.
I'm running a full scan with NAV and your program you suggested (at the same time). I had done a complete scan 4 days ago, but something could have jumped in after that. Does it sound like a virus?

Possibly. But with an error having been displayed it could be almost anything. Can you do a repair of the NAV install? If not, how about unpluggin from the internet and doing an uninstall and reinstall? Be sure to run LiveUpdate if you do a reinstall.

I'll try that next. It's still running those two scans. Nothing found yet.

Re: ccApp.exe & major slow down (XP sp2)

Both finished running, no major issues.
I uninstalled both ICQ and Norton AV5 and it unlocked the problem.

However, when I tried to reinstall NAV, it said that it couldn't find my temp folder. When I tried to browse for it, it hung trying to access it. I finally got into it, and am working on deleting a lot of the tmp files, but it's taking a long time to do so.

Can I delete that dir called temp and recreate it or will that mess things up?

You should be able to unless there are files in use.

Is that not a system folder? If I delete all of the directories under the temp dir do those programs not need those directories or will it re-create them?

'Temp' under the Windows installation folder is created by Windows as is the one located under 'Documents and settingsuseridLocal Settings' for each user. Files and folders created in a 'temp' folder are considered to be transient. The programs which create them are supposed to delete them when no longer needed. Not all programs clean up correctly. You should be able to delete them without any serious consequences. Programs which create files and folders within 'Temp' should re-create as required. However, if a file is inuse Windows will not let you delete the file nor the folder in which it resides.

Re: ccApp.exe & major slow down (XP sp2)

I'm still working on deleting all of the tmp files as something occurred on 3/02/05 that made thousands of tmp files. it seems to crash when I try to select all of them to delete, so I'm doing them 100 at a time.

Everything seems to be working now. <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23> It seems like it was something that NAV caused. Phew! Thanks for your help!!

You're welcome. Hope you get it all cleaned out & ship shape soon. As a reminder, don't go long without A/V of some sort. If you haven't reinstalled NAV and are looking for something different search the lounge as there are threads and links to various other products.

Yes, that was the first thing that I re-installed. Somehow that was the culprit though. Hmmm
