    XML features don't work (2003)

Hi all! I'm trying to play with Word's XML features and having a hard time. I'm not sure if my problems are due to installation or user error. :-D

I got this new machine and tried to access the XML features I saw mentioned in the help. None of the options were there (such as a New XML Document option in the task pane). Then I saw something in the help that mentioned that most XML features are only included in 2003 Professional. Turns out, I had Small Business Edition.

So, I get a copy of Professional and, without thinking, install it over SBE. As the installation finishes, I realize that it didn't mention anything about overwriting the existing version, and now I have two versions of Office. I couldn't execute any of the Pro versions--every app I opened said SBE in Help-About.

Sooo, I used Add Programs to remove the SBE version (with fingers crossed). That seemed to work. I still have Office apps, and Help-About now says Pro. However, I still can't get to any of the XML features that I think should be available.

Am I just missing something, or do I need to uninstall Pro and start from scratch?

    Thanks!

Hi, Bob. It's been my experience that you can never install a new one and go back to the old or whatever.... You'll really need to wipe all of Office (IMHO) and then reinstall what you want. Now, as for XML, I'd be sure to do a custom install of 2003 pro and make sure XML is one of the options. I don't really recall, it's been a while since I installed, but it seems to me that'd be doing it.

I have an edition of Office 2003 Professional Edition that was given out at a launch event, so I think it is the same as retail, but can't be 100% certain. Help>About says "Microsoft Office Word 2003 (11.6359.6360) SP1 Part of Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003".

I do have XML document on my New Document task pane. I think there is a good chance that your installation is, to use the technical terminology, messed up. You could try to run the 2003 installer again (either from Add/Remove programs or from the CD) and use add features (whatever they call getting back into the custom install dialog) to see if XML was somehow omitted from the original install. Or, if you haven't tried it yet, try Help>Detect and Repair from inside Word.

(Note: this is not my workaday PC, so I haven't used Word 2003 much yet.)

Re: XML features don't work (2003)

Well, the problem seems to have righted itself when I started up today--I guess the reboot fixed it. I can now see XML tags in XML files, and I can see all of the XML options.

And the rest of Office seems to be behaving, so I guess I'm no worse for wear even with my dual installation snafu! I feel somewhat like you do when you almost have a car wreck, but no one actually hits anyone and everyone's okay. You still feel the sense of dread, but then you shake it off and go on....

    Thanks!

Edited by HansV to reduce overly large screenshot in size (it caused horizontal scrolling on lower resolutions)

    Hi Bob,

If you're going to be playing with Word's XML features, I highly recommend downloading the free XML Toolbox, available at:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en
It's a great way to work with Word's XML with documents still open (see the attached screenshot).

    Cheers!

Thanks Andrew. I downloaded it, but I had to go poke around on the MS site to find actually what it offers. For anyone else who might be looking into Word's XML features, here's a link to an MSDN article about the toolbox.

I am looking for any other resources regarding Word and XML, particularly tutorials or other beginner-level documentation. I did download the XML Toolbox which is very helpful.

    Thanks!

Re: XML features don't work (2003)

I highly recommend Office 2003 XML. It's got a ton of useful info on using XML with Word 2003. And, pardon the plug, but check out chapter 10 of Word Hacks for more XML-related info (much of which is actually adapted from "Office 2003 XML").

To get started, Bill Coan's article on XML in Office2003 is also a good read.
You can find it in the "Downloads" section.
