Line spacing artefact (Word 2000)

I often receive documents from clients in which the apparent line spacing is wider than the actual line spacing setting. This can usually be corrected by cutting and pasting the text (without the final paragraph mark of each section) into a new file, but what causes it, and how can it be avoided? I wonder whether it is a hardware or version incompatibility.

Have a look in Format, Paragraph. In the Spacing section you can choose single, double, whatever - but you can also increase/decrease the points before and after. This makes the line spacing slightly bigger or smaller.
