    Re: Sequentially Section Numbering some sections (word 2000)

    You could use two differently named LISTNUM sequences, or bookmark the number in the header, and insert a cross-reference to this bookmark in the footer.

    Sequentially Section Numbering certain sections

    That title's a bit of an oversimplification, but it's the best I could do.

    Here's my quandry. I've been tasked to create a document wherein every third or fourth section (it will vary) has numbering in the Header and Footer with the section number and the section page. In other words, it'll look like s1p1, s2p1, s3p1, and so forth.

    The people reading the report will have an entirely different notion of the sections than Word does - Words section 3 may have to appear as S1, Words section 8 as S2, and so forth.

    The sections will be moved within the document quite frequently and the numbering must adjust automatically.

    The page numbering within the sections is no problem. But numbering the sections has been killing me. I've been trying to do it with codes. Nothing I tried which involved Heading Styles seemed to work. But I got it basically working by using the LISTNUM field.

    Now here's the latest rub. They want this Section number to appear in both the Header and the Footer. LISTNUM increases by 1 each time, so if I put it in both place, the numbers will be way off.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks to anyone who's made it this far through what's probably a semi-coherent post at best.

    Can this be considered similar to "chapter" numbering? There should be information in Word help and on this board (and lots of web sites, too) about how to integrate chapter numbering into headers and footers.

    If your heading styles are numbered then you could reference this number by using a styleref field
    {Styleref "Heading 1" n}

    When using sequence fields you can repeat the last number by using the c switch. You are not able to use sequence fields in the headers and footers though <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

    Thanks very much. The bookmark works really well. (although I fear that they are going to ask to use Autotext to insert entire new sections, including Headers and Footers, and then the new sections inserted this way will all have the same bookmark. I'm going to try hard to talk them out of that.)
    Cheers.

    Re: Sequentially Section Numbering certain section

    Thanks. I couldn't manage to use chapter numbering because of the way the document is set up - the chapter titles appear on separate title pages, but not on the pages with the numbering, and I couldn't manage to get the reference to a preceding page to work. But chapter numbering helped perfectly with a prolbem I had in another doc.
