    Outline formatting (2003)

Okay - I give up. I can make my custom outline look just like I want it too except for the (a) part - why can't I shorten that distance??????

You need to go to bullets and numbers, outline numbers customise and change the tab stop (and possibly the indent) for the third level

In the Customize outline dialog box there is a tab space after in the lower left. Your other levels have about .25 the level a. is set to .9

Thanks for the quick reply - but . . . I know HOW the process works, I just can't seem to come up with a number that doesn't affect the previous level adversely. I guess I just worded my question poorly - wow, can't imagine my doing that!!!

See the attachement of your document. I went to Format, Bullets and Numbering then to Customize.
For the level 3 in the text position area I set the tab space after to .25 and the indent to 1.2

Bless you!!!!! That's exactly what I needed to know. You've saved me today and I truely appreciate it - I've had a very bad couple of weeks personally and this saved me just one more of the bricks in the wall.

    Have a great day

Just as a footnote, it is generally recommended to make changes to list formats for the heading styles by modifying the style for Heading 1 and then, without closing Heading 1, modifying all of the levels from there. At least, that's what I've read here in the Lounge. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

This long thread has some useful links and tips: Pros/Cons Link Heading Style to Numbering (2000/XP).
